With the development of the Fairy type in Generation VI, the Magic type seems to have little to distinguish it from the Fairy type. In case one complains, "but there's such slight difference between the Ground type and the Rock type, and Nintendo still allows those", the two types do have significant differences. The Ground type's moves relate to tectonics, subterranean things, sand, sediment, particulate matter and mud, while the Rock type's moves relate to actual rocks or activities or properties related to rocks. (such as rock polishing in the move Rock Polish, or the tendency of precious stones to reflect light, as in Power Gem)
Several Fairy-type Pokémon have abilities which defy explanation and physical laws. This includes the ability to share happiness (an intangible thing) stored in its shell (Togepi), storing moonlight in its wings to float and fly despite its small wings and un-aerodynamic, fairly heavy body, (Clefairy) slipping through any gap, no matter how small, while still having a non-gaseous body (Whimsicott), and sharing eternal life. (Xerneas)
This, by itself, is not too distinct. Several Pokemon traits and even Pokemon themselves defy explanation and physical laws. (Such as Magcargo: living things that we know of are not made of lava and are not hotter than the surface of the sun.)
However, along with having abilities which defy explanation and physical laws, Fairy types also have abilities and traits unrelated to components (rocks, metal, water) or phenomena (fire) of the world. However, these abilities and traits are not earthly, bodily, simple, explainable, non-elemental and otherwise normal (Normal type). Nor do they have atypical might and menace as a defining characteristic (Dragon type) or traits reflecting gaseous things and other things that are intangible, such as shadows and fear. (Ghost type) The defining characteristic of the Fairy type is inconsistency and lack of understanding, and what is magic but phenomena that is not understood? (Beyond its execution, anyway. One may know how to operate a magic carpet or a car without knowing why it runs, without knowing what forces contribute to its actions in a linear manner)
In response to the Fairy type, what is to happen to the Magic type?
