I sort of watch anme but my free time makes it sporadic. Some things I've enjoyed over the last few years:

Code Geass: Clamp lolol. Somewhat ridiculous but fairly engaging, and while the motivations weren't as deep as they at first appeared, the ending was great.
TENGEN TOPPA GURREN LAGANN: BELIEVE IN YOURSELF WHO BELIEVES IN ME BELIEVING IN YOU! YOURS IS THE DRILL THAT WILL PIERCE THE HEAVENS! Don't bother with the second season!
Last Exile: Steampunky scifi/fantasy. Fairly short, but not really action packed, but things get more interesting towards the end. If you like airships, watch this.
Planetes: Slice of life near-future drama about the ambitions of people who clear away space debris. Interesting psychologically but started sucking when it swapped the focus one character to another about half way through. If you like space stuff, watch this.


And some favourites:
Avatar: Not Japanese but a very similar style, with the bonus that no punny stuff is lost in translation and no subs or bad voice acting. Start with Last Airbender, then move on to Korra. You won't regret it.
Haruhi Suzumiyah: One of the best-written shows I've seen in a while if you can get past the moe moe dancy stuff. The exploration of what would happen to an oblivious god on earth is fantastic.
Cowboy Bebop: Just.. just watch it. And then buy the soundtrack CDs. Ok, three, two one, let's jam.

Korra's mastered three types of bending at the expense of not being able to learn Air and Energy bending, and having any Spirit world contact, a major part of being an avatar. Her love interest isn't love-interested in her, she's never been the leader of the elite squad and in fact stops doing that altogether, and Amon's not an energy bender. Or, it's not clear that he is. What he seems to be doing is blocking the chakra that controls bending, just like how the chi blockers do it on the body...
But the pacing's weird and the writing hasn't been as good, but things have finally started going somewhere in episode 8.
Ah well. Maybe give it another chance if you can!

Well, Aang knew spirit bending, and if Korra manages to contact the spirit world, Aang's going to be her guide, so it's not going to be a lost art then, is it? And since it currently IS a lost art, and I doubt Aang taught him, how would Amon learn it? Amon doesn't spirit bend :P
Both the wiki and my memory of the episode say Korra only joined the task force. She never lead it. Tarrlok wouldn't give up the power!
Aang had less trouble with Earth-bending than Korra is having with Air; it's because she's all about fighting, and what she has learnt she learnt during a pro bending match. Air-bending is more spiritual which came to Aang easily. It's unfair to say everyhing comes to Korra easiy. And if Mako was interested in Korra, he wouldn't be with Asami... if he was interested in both equally, Korra's also the avatar, which kind o fcounts for a lot. He likes Asami more! And it was a relief when they talked it out, which was a nice change from the normal thing in these situations.
