"Yeeessss," shouted a muffled voice far from the door. Stumbling and falling objects could be heard as the responder neared the door. After unlocking and opening it, he greeted the trainer who was standing on the other side, "Welcome, young one, how may I be of service to you?"

"Well, I should have known. You do have that glint in your eyes. The name's Aaron," informed the man in the lab coat as he gestured for Tommy to follow him as he walked to the back room.

When they arrived, Tommy could see four tables with dividers. The far left was marked with a leaf, the middle table with a fireball and the right table with a raindrop. There was also a table behind the first three; it was larger than the other three and had a question mark as its symbol. While Tommy stopped and took in the surroundings, Aaron walked over to the tables, turned and asked the trainer-to-be, "Did you have some idea of your choice for your starting companion? Otherwise, I would be more than happy to explain the options to you."

A silhouette materialized from the red rays emitted by the ball, which revealed a long middle portion connecting to a spherical end at the bottom and a flag-like extension from its upper end. This body remained floating in midair as its blue color was revealed, and it cried out, Hyyym ymno noo noooootee!

Aaron smiled as Tommy's partner floated up and around its trainer, seemingly investigating the young man.

"You know, if you want to find out more about that little one there, you can recall it to its Pokeball and place it in that machine over there on the wall," he informed Tommy as he gestured to a large black, blue and grey machine with a hemispherical slot on a terrace-shaped extension.

The machine began to turn on once the ball was securely in the slot. The startup screen showed before the screen turned a dark green color and information began appearing in the form of white text: 

"Ah, yes," acknowledged the lab assistant as he walked over to the machine and turned it off, "There is one more detail we have to iron out--." Aaron had cut himself off and ran out of the room through a nearby door before he finished his thought.

He proceeded to shut the door quickly behind him, which could not have evoked any reaction other than confused curiosity from the fledgling trainer. Now what could be through that door? (said the narrator suspiciously)

A landscape much different than the technologically-dominated one of the previous room. The light came from multiple skylights in the ceiling. Wait, no they weren't skylights at all, rather remotely-retractable windows that allowed fresh air flow through in the spring time and closed during bad weather conditions. On the ground there was a grass-covered arena with markings that normally delineated an official PKMN Gym Battle territory...

OH SO THAT'S WHAT THIS OTHER PIECE OF BUSINESS IS! AARON IS A SLY DOG. I NEVER EXPECTED THIS! AAAAAHHHHHHH!!! (sorry, I get carried away sometimes)

Aaron grinned, "Welcome to our last task before your journey officially begins. Here you will take on your first Gym Battle. Now, Ledyba, I choose you!" As he greeted the challenger, the blonde man threw a Pokeball, from which materialized a small bug PKMN with a red exoskeleton possessing black dots.

"Ready to begin?"

A simple tactic but we've only just started, Aaron thought before issuing his own command, "Stop it in its tacks with a Growl Ledyba! Ready your wings just in case." The little Bug-type began to slowly beat its wings as it took in breath and let loose a startling noise at its opponent.

((I set that up on purpose, you're fine.))

Having forgotten about his opponent's ability, Aaron was caught unprepared when his tactic failed. Hymnote zoomed forward and knocked the open-shelled Ledyba aside. Incidentally the impact with the ground was not braced for by the little ladybug and its exoskeleton became bent at its edge on its right side, meaning it couldn't close its shell properly. Getting up anyway, the PKMN showed willpower and toughness of the mind.

"Well, that didn't work. Let's Tackle 'em!"

At the sound of the shrieking noise, two things happened. Firstly, Aaron's face contorted into an expression that could only be described as befuddled. Secondly, Ledyba stood still where it was. The Bug-type didn't fall asleep, mind you, it just happened to be so caught off guard by the outcry that it wasn't sure how to continue.

"Hunh," Aaron shrugged, "I guess the attack must have failed entirely. Too bad for you, maybe it will come with time. Anyways, what're you doing, Ledyba?! Get 'im!" And with that final command, the ladybug PKMN resumed its forward charge.

Ledyba's attack had apparently not had enough force behind it to make the opponent's battler lose its balance. Accordingly, the little music note foe took the opportunity of Ledyba's hasty post-strike retreat to attack for itself.
