BonzaiRob wrote:The thing that upsets me about Bronies is how they have ended up trying to claim MLP for their own. This is a show which focuses on adventure and friendship and making your own way with your own skills, it's funny and smart and a good show. But. This is something that is severely lacking in shows for girls! Can you imagine what it would be liek to grow up and have the people most like you in cartoons (or just on kids' TV) representing "heart" or "love", or being a mother or a love interest? Basically, only ever acting in the interests other people and never being real, fleshed-out characters themselves? "If you're a girl, you have to put everyone else's wants ahead of your own because you're just not as important as the boys!" So, along comes MLP, a show focused on girls that is about them being relatable and having real character, flaws and all. And what happens? Adult male fans try to co-opt it. They demand things of the creators - like, demanding Ditzy Doo have screen time and be renamed "Derpy", and be someone who gets things wrong, but aww, how sweet, she tried her best right? But it's ok because her fans love her! And back we go to a woman's character being that she acts in the interest of others. A 1D girl who gets things wrong so that male fans can feel protective. And back we go to offensive stereotyping of a character that disabled children had empathised with, minute though her role had been. Let's call her Derpy, a pejorative for weird-looking people that these kids have to deal with being called. Yes, that did offend people and make children sad. No, they weren't overreacting. And I'm glad the studio had the sense to recut that episode. Let's hope they learned the lesson of catering to bronies over the the fans. And that's what upsets me about bronies. It doesn't matter how you feel about that but if you still associate as a brony and treat it like a caring community after that stunt? If you think Ditzy should be Derpy? You are not being a kind and caring person and you are not representing the core message of the show. Because in the end, this show is not for you, and it should stay that way.

Especially on the internet, where children are going to be searching for pictures of their favourite characters, and instead coming upon adult art and blogs. It's not cool. Gelatop: Let's go over this statement: Gelatop wrote:]I NEVER loved Derpy because I wanted to demean retarded people. I LITERALLY NEVER even though of it until the controversy came up. I just considered her a clumsy character. I LOVE DERPY. 1: The phrase "retarded people" is offensive. The actual mental condition of retardation is rare, and the word gets applied to all sorts of people because they look weird. The only thing wrong with Ditzy is wall/lazy eye. That doesn't make her stupid, or mentally disabled. It's a small physical defect and people automatically assume it's a mental one. Can you see how that would be offensive? 2: The word "derp", is equivalent. It has its lighthearted meaning, but at its core, it is used to demean people who look weird, and the lazy assumption is that people who look like that are stupid. The lighthearted meaning to it is even MORE poisonous here, because people with no malice will use it, but it still hurts someone who has had it used as the pejorative. Compare: Calling things "gay" when you mean they're bad. 3: That you insist on calling her Derpy when the name has been retracted by the show's creators shows that your loyalties lie with bronies, not with the show's creators. That you've never thought of it being offensive before the controversy isn't good either, all it shows is that you've been inconsiderate. Also, that you're still calling her Derpy AFTER being aware of the controversy shows you didn't care all that much. Gelatop wrote:The Save Derpy movement (including artwork and videos) convinced me the fandom doesn't want to keep her because they want to make fun of a group of people. [...] They're offended by getting rid of her because they feel that would be saying that being imperfect is offensive. 1: The show creators never wanted to get rid of her, just change the name back to Ditzy and change how Rainbow Dash shouted at her. "Ugh, you never get anything right." What a fantastic message to send to disabled children! 2: It's not their decision to make and they have no right to be offended. You know who DOES have a right to be offended? All the people who complained after the episode because of how badly they got it wrong. Gelatop wrote:]If this doesn't prove these characters love Derpy and don't mean to put her down, but want to support her to the end, then I don't know what will. I don't mean to be too hard on you here because I know you've found a community here that you really like and enjoy. I''m not deliberately trying to ruin it for you, but you seem to have a lot of misconceptions about this, and in this case they're dangerous ones that end up with people getting hurt. Please, recognise that this community has flaws like any other.

Memebase (probably the number one source on memes)

No.. that's exactly my point. You don't get to decide if "derp" is offensive. Of course it's not offensive to you, it doesn't affect you. This is called "privilege". You're being very, very inconsiderate, and saying you love a character doesn't take that away. You know why Membase said it wasn't offensive? Memebase is run by people like yourself who either aren't aware or don't care that "derp" hurts people. They will fight to keep it there and pretend it's not offensive because it's run and edited by people who love memes. To them, that trumps any offense. Nobody, nobody, thinks a character with a lazy eye is offensive. This is called a straw-man argument: you've made a straw-man who you say thinks it's offensive, and now you're blaming it for things. No-one cares about the lazy eye. What people care about is the name "derp", see above, and partially that Rainbow Dash called her stupid, as I mentioned before. That's the issue here. And this is why people don't like bronies: you have decided that it's not offensive because who would get offended over this? You haven't actually taken in my post in a meaningful way. You've dismissed it straight off because doing otherwise would make you question describing yourself as a brony, which you really don't want to do. Gelatop wrote:There were WAY more people offended about the Derpy changes than people offended about original Derpy. Like tens of thousands more. There are way more white people than black people in america. During the civil rights movement, I wonder how many more white americans there were who thought black people shouldn't be able to vote, than there were black people? Or for a more modern example, how many more people think that gay people shouldn't be able to get married, compared to gay people whose lives are ruined because they can't be together? This isn't a good argument. Gelatop wrote:I debated this with my friends for fun. How do I have misconceptions? How many of your friends are disabled? How many are made fun of for the way they look with the word "derp"? If the answer is not more than zero, yes, you have misconceptions. Imagine three people: two of them are so full of food that thinking about eating any more makes them feel ill. One of them has not eaten for a day. If it comes to a vote, they will vote not to eat, and the hungry guy will stay hungry. I don't have anything against you either, really I don't, but I'm worried that you're so caught up in being a brony that you're losing sight of how these things all hurt other people.

BonzaiRob wrote:Gelatop wrote:Then why do you get to decide if "derp" is offensive? I don't, I never did. Did you miss the part where there was a huge controversy over this? It wasn't just me writing letters. The issue is not intentionally hurting feelings. The issue is feelings being hurt, and people (like yourself!) carrying on using words that cause hurt, because they're "not offensive". It's not your place to say it's not offensive. Come on, just think for a second about all the words different races have for one another... I used race inequalities as comparisons because I hoped it would help you understand about the majority hurting the few. Apparently not? The fact that this is an issue about cartoon characters disqualifies comparisons to a more universal struggle? So you and your friends debated both sides of the case whit your what, combined nearly 40 years of experience of the world and the people in it and the horrible ways we treat one another, and decided that this was fine? Everyone stop being hurt because a couple of teenagers have decided that this isn't offensive. Again, it's not your place to say it's not offensive. You can show me examples of people with eye problems or mental or physical problems not finding "derp" offensive. I don't know if you realise this, but, that doesn't erase all the other people who DO find it offensive. There are women out there who wish with every fibre of their being, and actively campaign for, a return to the 40s lifestyle of women staying at home doing housework all day. That doesn't mean women don't deserve equal chances in life, or that it's ok to be sexist towards women, and it doesn't mean that the struggles of the ones who want equal rights don't count. A bunch of men saying they don't find "get back to the kitchen" jokes offensive does not make those jokes ok. A bunch of women not finding it offensive is, to be honest, a whole lot less likely, but it STILL does not make those jokes ok. Nothing makes it ok. Please stop telling me that because they're not meant to offend, they're not offensive.
