Governor Chaffe of Rhode Island (that's where I live) thinks that the state house tree should be called a Holiday tree instead of a Christmas tree.

What do you think?

Christmas tree.
As for "Holiday Tree"----that simply does not make sense. Several holidays are celebrated during December, (making "Holiday Season" a sensible term) but the Christmas tree is associated exclusively with Christmas.

Bringing in the tree and decorating it was specified as a heathen, heretic practice in the bible. Jeremiah 10 or some such:

1 Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:
2 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
5 They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.

And then it goes on about God being jealous and wrathful and generally grumpy abut the whole business for twenty verses.

So calling it a Christmas tree is purely cultural, not religious, and this man should probably not be governor if he can't make the distinction. =D

Doesn't really matter to me one way or the other. I always end up calling it "the tree" anyways.

Each holiday has their own distinction. For Christmas, one of them is the tree, for the reason Bonzai described. There is no tree involved in Hanukkah or Kwanzaa or December-Religist-Holiday-That's-Not-Christmas-Name-Here. Just Christmnas.

Christmnas is a holiday to celebrate when our lord and savior Jesus-Christman descended from the heavens and was faster than a speeding bullet.
It was originally known as "Christmanmas", but as time went on everyone decided that "Christmanmas" was too long and merged "man" and "mas" to create "Christmnas".
Sadly, we will not get off school on Christmnas. This is largely due to other religions, such as the popular "Batmanism" and the minority "Christianity", that are threatening to massacre Christmanians and mass-suicide if Christmnas was declared a civic holiday.
Personally, as a student of the Christmanic Holy Doctrine, I believe that everyone else is utter nonsense. It is very obvious, as even in the dark Lex-Luthorian legends is Christman mentioned as being the Holy son of Demoman.
I must, however, admit that Christboyian beliefs have some merits. For those who are not familiar, "Christboyism" is the belief that Christman ridded of our super-sins with the help of his faithful sidekick, Christboy. While we Christmanians believe that Christman is our sole lord, the concept of Christboy is not in contrary with our doctrines.
