The DS Legendary Contest - Wind Types! - The Results!

Since I do feel like we have cheated the entrants somewhat out of their critique while simply giving things a negative score, I'm going to summarize how the staff reacted to the pokemon, emphasizing my own views. Remember, these are not personal attacks, and please, do not let anything here discourage you! Rather, let it spur you forward!

Here are the rules which we worked from:

Must be legendaries
Must be a duo like Lati@s (two similar pokemon) or Cresselia/Darkrai (two opposites thematically linked), not just two unrelated pokemon.
Not a cloud or Wind-type because it floats; should not be feasible as a Flying-type.

These were specified way back in the first post, although perhaps not strongly enough. Another thing we staff have learned from this experience: In the bit of the rules where we wrote this:

Desc: Please make your description as detailed as possible!

We should have written it more like this:

Desc:: Please make your text description as detailed, long and specific as possible. We want to know everything about this pokemon, every single detail, of both appearance and behaviour!

So, lesson learnt!

Pollutair and Purifilter:
We liked the simplicity of the designs, but decided it was more sort of blank canvas than simple painting. The duo dynamic was well-realised, and the designs were very good (particularly the hazmat suit idea), but they simply didn't seem Legendary in power; they were very human-influenced. If you want to resuggest these as normal pokemon with a Zangoose/Seviper dynamic, they would most likely be approved!

Sirrocap and Muffligid:

Unfortunately, these were disqualified outright for violating the third rule above: they were clouds, and feasible as Flying-type.

Conceptually, two Legendaries like this are a neat idea, but not what we were looking for in this contest. They weren't quite similar enough to be like the Latis, and weren't opposite enough to be Darkrai/Cresselia.

Additionally, there was not enough description, the submission relied primarily on the image.

Visually, we felt that they were a little bland; Pokemon are fundamentally cartoony in nature, and both of these lacked facial features definite form. While this may have been a deliberate decision, there should have been some indication of deliberate face-covering or masks for misdirection, not a pure lack of features.

Roriolis and Circonvect:

Another neat two-winds idea, but represented by clouds, and so disqualified. Side note: We would have accepted these characteristics from a Wind/Flying type.

We could have overlooked the cloud similarity here though, as the design did not singularly rely on being clouds as such.

We were generally impressed by the duality and thought put into the Pokemonification of abstract wind phenomena, but the final visual design was too abstract and difficult to read. We weren't sure, for instance, if the markings on the colourful horns/protrustions were eyes nor not. Even if they were, they seemed to be an afterthought. In the end, we felt they lacked charisma, being more like representations of phenomena than powerful monsters.

There was not much other information to work with for this entry, and there were some short-sighted decisions, such as higher Attack when there are barely any physical Wind moves.

Hurrlind and Hurrark:
These followed the main criteria of the contest fairly well, debatably working as Flying-type, but there was very little description or detail.

Jibayuna and Bayubisu:
As the winners, these were obviously generally favoured. Despite lacking somewhat in physical description, the background info showed that Patricol had put a lot of thought into the influences and general concepts, and there was plenty of detail. She recognised that condensing info into dex entries is not one of her strengths so decided to let us handle it, which was smart. The entire entry was well-thought-out and characterised.

There were no overpowered signature moves, and both are neutral, rather than one being good and one being bad. The interaction between the two is interesting.

However, the names could have been simplified a little, and Euphoria's name is a little misleading.

Sonotus and Danzephyr:
The physical descriptions were somewhat lacking, but the concepts were well-researched and interesting. However, Meloetta has song and dance covered already, making these somewhat unoriginal, especially since this was a duo of Mew-like pokemon.

Conceptually, we weren't happy with them representing only the South and West winds - for a duo, opposite winds would have made more sense, and even then, it naturally leads to the other two Anemoi turning up later on, which wasn't part of the contest.

To quote one staffer anonymously: "If Sonotus is credited with inspiring woodwinds, why does it look like headphones? I'm pretty sure woodwinds were invented long before headphones. Did Sonotus also inspire the designs for data jacks just in case headphones would be invented later?" We also thought it odd that the light and wispy dancer was heavier than the singer.

There were too many signature moves - we had to assume they were signatures and not for other pokemon to use, as it was not otherwise specified - and they and the abilities seemed somewhat overpowered. One pokemon receiving more signature moves than the other also seemed imbalanced.

Petaeros and Dyspreeze:
The concepts were good, but lacked detail other than the pictures. We felt 75 ft was waaay too tall for a pokemon, especially considering the weight (1687lbs) was tiny in comparison (by my very conservative calculations, if Petaeros were made of water it would weigh something like 32000 lbs!) However, wind erosion as a Groudon-esque force of nature was very well received, but we felt Dyspreeze was too humanoid.

It seemed a little odd that Petaeros can use Water Gun, despite it being there in the dex, and we weren't sure about Dispersal effecting other pokemons' abilities.

I'll continue with the rest tomorrow!

These were not just clouds. I have said this before, but it is worth saying again: they were more like wind spirits. Please explain how they could be Flying-types; their appendages were not actually wings, and they did not flap anything to become airborne. They were made of winds.

(No hard feelings...at least, on my part. I am not so sure about you, Staff. I understand these comments are meant only as constructive criticism, but I would rather not have my shortcomings pointed out repeatedly when just one post of explanation would suffice. I am offended.)

... Scorn? *tilt* errr... anyway, Wind Spirits or whatever, I think the point is we wanted pokemon that could hardly be possibly flying types and had a thorough description and a definite forme.

Coolteph, there were design decisions you could have made to make them more obviously spirits - the first one that comes to mind, making them Wind/Ghost. This is to do with execution of the concept, and it's where your entry fell short.

They could be Flying types because they are very obviously flying in the pictures you posted, they were clouds because one was a cloud of sand, the other a cloud of ice - spirits were not mentioned once in your post, the closest was "genie-like". Bear in mind, sicne you say none of this was intended, the contest was not only about the pokemon, you have to put enough detail into your suggestion that we know exactly what it is.

There's no scorn here, at all - we just want you to know why you didn't win. While we are pointing out shortcomings, it's only specific to this contest.

o3o I should've known better than to think that I could just leave Vapor Wave (which was IDENTICAL TO THE MOVE HEAT WAVE IN EVERY WAY EXCEPT FOR ITS TYPE) without being noted as a normal move... Just kidding, but it does seem kind of silly, especially when Heat Wave was in the same slot on the opposite list. =/ Still, I concede that my suggestions weren't handled correctly and that that is why I got 3rd. I'll use this as a learning experience. ^.^
