Points represent the entropy of the universe. The more "points" a topic has, the more entropy it has accumulated. (joke)

Points were previously known as 'kudos'. If you like a topic very much, you can give it a kudo/point to indicate you like it. No one really uses the feature, though.

I wonder... is there a point to this topic any more? There's something about it that bothers me, but I can't pinpoint what it is... Oh well, at this point in time I guess it's better not to worry about it.
