There seems to be a bit of a discussion on the board about the interpretation of our
unhappiness evolution method. Apparently, some members seem to think it
is about mistreating your pokémon and treat them so horridly, until they evolve out of utter misery.
Of course, we never intended unhappiness to be about mistreating your pokémon. It is just a counterpart of the happiness method for cheerful pokémon - unhappiness evolves sad or gloomy pokémon; Oiel being a perfect example of this.
To solve this issue, we created a new item, namely the Gloomy Bell! This item works differently from the Soothe Bell. Its ringing gives off sound waves at a frequency that makes the holder depressed. A pokémon holding it will lose happiness instead of gaining it through ways like walking around with its trainer or levelling up. On the other hand, factors that causes the holder to lose happiness - like fainting or being fed bitter healing items - are nullified.
This means that, to get your pokémon to a happiness value of 0 in the easiest way possible, you attach the Gloomy Bell to it, and treat it just as good as all your other pokémon!
