The problem here is you used flood fill in just one colour. The darker colours are where the object is in shadow. Look at anything around you and you'll notice part of it is lit and part is in shade. Obviously, the lightest part of the object will be closest to the light, and the darkest will be the furthest away (like, the other side). This gets more complicated if there are multiple sources of light around you - a window as well as a lamp, for instance - so if you want to try to learn about this, wait until night-time and use a single lamp to see where shadows and light are on different-shaped objects.
The reason you should do this is (warning: advanced art level) that shadows define the form (shape) of an object to someone who CAN'T see it in 3D. A ball's shadow is not a straight line going across it, the shadow curves with the shape of the ball.
If you're learning, don't worry about understanding all of it, just try to understand the first section. If you manage to take it all in, so much the better.

Here's how you can work out lighting. Light always travels in straight lines.

Notice how the first ball looks completely flat. That's because the shading is flat!

And things don't only cast shadows on themselves they effect the world around them:

The first ball makes no sense whatsoever. The second two show you how the shadow should look (if I was good enough at perspective and they didn't look like they were resting on a curved surface). Another thing to bear in mind is that the edges of shadows become less defined (sharp) the further away they are from the object casting the shadow.


And finally, the balls (that look like balls and not discs) look sort of fluffy, like they're made of rubber or felt (it's called "matte"). That's because there's no direct reflections. Here's where it gets even more complicated.
The thing to remember about light is that it is ALL ABOUT reflections. We see things because light bounces off them, and into our eyes. The reason the object looks brightest closer ot the light is because that bit is getting hit with more light rays, more of which are bouncing back at us.
You might be wondering, "what about mirrors? They bounce light, and I can see reflections in them; why doesn't that happen with everything?"
Well, first off, I'm glad to see you using semicolons. But the difference is something called diffusion. This is when, instead of light bouncing straight off of something and hitting our eyes, it's scattered in all different directions and only SOME of the light rays get back to us.
Mirrors bounce everything perfectly; a material made of lots of little things (like the hairs in fur/felt), or with a surface that isn't smooth (rubber, when you look close, has tiny lumps), bounces light rays in all directions, causing diffusion. The balls above are (or at least look) diffuse.

Here's how they look when they're shiny, instead:

Ignoring the disc for a moment, you will notice first that the balls now reflect their yellow lights directly. The light is hitting the ball, and bouncing straight at our eyes.
Secondly, they are also now reflecting their environment, the grey void. The light is bouncing off the grey void, and hitting the ball; in the diffuse balls, above, this light didn't have very much energy, so nothing else happened. However, because these balls are now reflecting everything, the light now bounces off the grey void, then off the ball, then back to us!
This is sometimes called secondary lighting, and i s useful to make a piece of art look interesting, but shouldn't be used in sprites unless it's a Fire- or Light- type that has something glowing on it.

The disc is showing something that I've seen a lot on sprites, and did myself when I was starting out back in the GSC days, when dinosaurs roamed the earth and making fake pokemon was the only way to survive.
It's sometimes called rim lighting, and while it does have some practical applications (they use it in TF2 to make silhouettes more obvious) you should NEVER use it on sprites. It just makes it look like there's a flat bit going around the edge, as I've tried to demonstrate with the doodles.

Don't expect to understand this straight away, it\s the sort of thing that sinks in over time and then clicks, to mix my metaphors. Just keep at it!
