The first thing to do is to make them look 3-D. Right now they're just two-dimensional creatures. Start by making them face in a way that you can see the front and side of their body so that their legs are in a better shape than a line.

Shading will seriously help you, as will making more deliberate lines. Try to get your lines to flow together

Also, not using paint.
Buy (or pirate) Adobe CS4 Master Collection. Because CS5 sucks.
For smoother lines, learn how to use the pen tool in Illustrator, or if you want to be super extreme get well at using the pen tool in Photoshop.

I find Paint to work very well. So long as you know how to use it properly you can make some good art. I made this thing from scratch on there, and I think it looks pretty nice:
