"No writing here, I promise," he said as he walked into the room, which was bathed in sunlight. In fact, it didn't have a cieling at all, and the floor was grass with some white flowers. Only the presence of walls in all directions confirmed that they hadn't completely left the building. "This test is more...active than that. It's the final exam that students in our Trainer School would take, to demonstrate that they know how to handle a pokémon battle." Those words brought home the fact that the white flowers were actually arranged in the lines of a standard pokémon arena. "In fact, though my pokémon will be low-level enough for this to be little more than a test of your basic competence, the Bombur Pokémon League considers this the first Gym."

Aaron had now reached the far side's trainer position, and turned to face Brad and Jarulso. "I don't do Double Battles here, so one of you will need to wait; there's a bench over there," he said, pointing to their left. "Defeating me earns you our region's Pokédex, and the Bombur Pokémon League's first Gym Badge!"

Gym Leader AARON wants to battle!   

Aaron tossed out his first pokéball. "Nevermore, let's go!"

The raven pokémon emerged and cawed a challenge. "Vveeerr!"

"Open with a Tackle!"

Nevermore skidded to stop itself after the miss, and got caught by the tongue. It squirmed and squawked in protest as Meieki started squeezing.

"Peck it, Nevermore!" Aaron called. Nevermore hopped awkwardly closer to Meieki and tried to stab it with its large beak.

Nevermore was flung from the tongue and thudded on the grass, then quickly righted itself and shook out its feathers.

"All right, try another Tackle!" Aaron ordered. Nevermore set its sights on the grey Kecleon and charged.

Nevermore, confused by Meieki's parry, stuck around long enough to get tagged by the STAB-bonus Scratch. The extra damage was enough to kayo the raven pokémon.

"Ooh, bad luck. Rest for now, Nevermore!" Aaron recalled his fainted pokémon. "You certainly know what you're doing!" he remarked to Jarulso. "One more opponent; let's see if you can faint Ledyba as quickly." He tossed out his second pokéball. "Ledyba, start with a Growl!"

The ladybug pokémon emerged and greeted Meieki with a fierce chitter to lower his attack.
