"Well, nine out of ten options are guaranteed to be that," Aaron said. "Do you know about our Starter options? We offer three different Grass-types, three different Fire-types, three different Water-types, all of which originated here in Bombur...and then a Random option that could be practically anything, indigenous or not."

Light poured out of the thrown pokéball, and gathered into a little ball on the floor. As the ball came back down to arm level, the light faded to reveal an orange ball wrapped in green. Sawyer's plant knowledge quickly told her this was a pumpkin wrapped in leaves, but her glasses told her it was fairly warm...and then two eyes and a mouth popped open on one side, revealing a soft yellow glow from within.
"PLUMP kin! Kikikikin!"
"Yup, that one's a Bombur native, all right," Aaron noted. "In fact, its evolved form Lanterror is a Magic-type, one of our pokémon types that's rare or nonexistant in most other areas."

She figured it out pretty quickly when she saw what lay behind that door. It was a courtyard of sorts; they were still within the building, but the ground was a grassy field instead of floor tiles, and there was no roof over this area. Small white flowers had been planted in this field, along the lines of a standard pokémon battle arena...and Aaron stood in the trainer's space at the far end.

"To prove you can handle the basics of pokémon training, you must use your new Plumpkin to defeat me in a battle! This is the Bombur Pokémon League's first Gym! (Don't worry, I'm using pretty low-level pokémon.)"

Gym Leader AARON wants to battle!

"Go, Nevermore!" Aaron tossed a pokéball and a small purple bird with a mean-looking beak emerged.
"Start off with a Tackle!"
Nevermore dashed toward Plumpkin with intent to ram the Grass-type. It stumbled a bit when Plumpkin Leered at it, but wasn't about to let that stop it.

Aaron cocked an eyebrow. "Nevermore, back away and use Growl!"
Nevermore, whose Tackle attempt had taken it straight under Plumpkin, quickly flapped its wings, flew ten or so feet away, and prepared to Growl at Plumpkin when it landed.

At the sight of Plumpkin's Leer, Nevermore squawked awkwardly and backed up a step or two. Its ability to defend itself was taking a beating.
"Hm. maybe the best defense is a good offense! Nevermore, go for a Peck this time!"
"More!" Nevermore squawked a challenge and dove at Plumpkin to attack with its beak.

"Y'know, that sort of strategy works better if you don't shout it aloud," Aaron noted. He didn't bother giving Nevermore any different instruction, though.

Plumpkin ducked as Nevermore reached it, but it was no use. What Sawyer had forgotten, or possibly never really learned, was that pecks nearly always involve attacking downward. Plumpkin got hit squarely. Since Plumpkin had used Leer more times than Nevermore had used Growl, though, the reply Tackle hit hard as well, leaving both pokémon the worse for wear.

"All right, Nevermore, try another Tackle now!" Aaron called. Nevermore, somewhat dazed, squawked an affirmative and headed toward Plumpkin again at ramming speed.

Plumpkin strained to hear what Sawyer was saying. It wasn't sure, but it thought it had the gist. It actually dodged in the wrong direction, right instead of left, but that didn't matter much. Nevermore, expecting to hit Plumpkin, stumbled as its run carried it farther than it had expected.

"Nevermore, give it another Growl!" Aaron called. Nevermore steadied itself, turned to face Plumpkin...and got smacked by Plumpkin's Tackle.

Images of smaller Nevermore flying around its head, Nevermore tried to Growl, but couldn't manage more than a croak. Then it collapsed, out for the count.

"Hmm. All right, Nevermore, it was a good try. Come on back." He recalled the fainted bird, and then sent out his second and last pokémon for the match. "Get ready, Ledyba!"

The ladybug pokémon burst from its Pokéball, ready for action. "Dy Dyba!"

"Go for a Tackle!" Aaron instructed. Ledyba charged forward to attack.

Plumpkin watched Ledyba come in, and when there was only a foot between them, it squashed itself as best it could. Ledyba, being over twice Plumpkin's size, was already aiming for a small target, but Plumpkin's last-second ducking caused Ledyba to accidentally run over the Grass-type instead of ramming it properly. Plumpkin didn't quite fit under Ledyba's body, though, so Ledyba wound up stuck on top of Plumpkin, its feet unable to reach the ground.

Despite the discomfort of being squashed under Ledyba, Plumpkin gingerly reached up with some of its leaves, and started to Tickle Ledyba anywhere it could reach. "Dyyyyybababababa!!" Ledyba squirmed, and finally snapped its wings open and shot upward to escape.

"Give it a Growl, Ledyba!" Aaron called. Ledyba settled back onto the ground, still shaking and panting somewhat, and chittered fiercely at Plumpkin. "BA dybaaa!"
