Feel free to reply if you can't pick between two, and to specify which games you love =D
Also, it would be cool if you add links to where you can play the games, if possible. Sharing is caring.
Explanation of some of the terms:
FPS: First Person shooter.
Shmup: Shoot 'em up, usually top down or side-on.
RPG/Adventure: A spectrum I find it hard to describe. RPG end is Final Fantasy and Pokemon, Adventure end is Zelda.
Point and Click: Used to be very popular; Machinarium is a modern example.
Pattern: Things like Guitar Hero and DDR where you have to match buttons to the screen prompts.
Sports: Does anyone actually like these? on second thoughts, I'm not adding it. Sports games are uniformly terrible =D

Aaargh, Bonzai. You make it hard. I like puzzle games, but also Action-Adventure. That's why I love the Zelda series: a good mix of puzzle, action, and RPG. Eh, I guess I'll just vote for RPG/Adventure.

Hard to choose...
I mostly prefer platformers and adventure games. Mega Man's pretty good too, I guess.

RPG/Action Adventure. I prefer story-driven titles, though I'm not saying I can't appreciate something as varied and diverse as Megaman 9, which has a flat story.

Simple is good too. I guess Sandbox style games are also fun. My fave titles are Fire Emblem, Pokémon (durrrr), Final Fantasy is good, LoZ of course, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask rocked. Other than that... The World Ends With You is the best gaming experience I've ever had.

I pretty much share EP's opinion, except I´ve heard all sorts of stories about TWEWY about it falling flat, having many plot twists, etc, in the end I decided for other games.

For RPGs with set characters and story, I loved Final Fantasy IV (though VI and III are good too), Chrono Trigger and my favorite: Paper Mario: tTYD.

For more free-spirited RPGs I absolutely reccommend the Pokémon games (though it's not necessary here) and Dragon Quest IX which I dare say, it's the RPG of the year.

Bonzai, you're asking this on a Pokemon forum. 90% of us are RPG fans (I'm more on the adventure side) and the rest are probably into tactical or platformers. (Tactical didn't get any votes though yet. FPS did instead.)

I think the distinction between RPG and Adventure is that in an RPG, you take a lot more control of your character's growth and development, their personality, and you have a lot more freedom in how you complete quests, up to and including having multiple endings, whereas Adventure have a pretty strict plot, usually with only one ending, possibly a few sidequests and the character is decided by the developers, not you.

Also, RPGs tend to have a lot more turn-based fighting, though it's by no means a requirement; some of the best RPGs going don't have it, i.e. BioShock, Oblivion, Fable, etc.

You immediately brought to my mind the Final Fantasy games: They have been set as one of the most famous exponents of the RPG genre,yet the characters in most of those games got their personality more established than say, Link in the Adventure game series"the Legend of Zelda." They may be the ones guilty of making people assume that turn-based and/or strategy battle system equals Role-Playing Game.
