(I have waited long enough. Time to shake off my nervousness and go for it!)
Pioneer Prairie Dog

(In order from left to right: "Beret Dog", "Ruffled Dog", and "Explorer Coyote". Actual size is mostly proportional; the Beret Dog is approximately the size of a breadbox, including the tail. The Ruffled Dog’s head, when it is upright, meets approximately the height of someone’s knee, (two feet, three feet?) and the Explorer Coyote is about or slightly taller than the height of the average woman in the U.S, and is thus approximately 5' 4.6" (164.1 cm) in height.)
Prairet (PRAIRie dog + beRET) “Beret Dog”
Type: Normal
Gender Ratio: 50/50
Gender differences: None.
Egg group: Ground
Special Ability: PickUp
Height: Approximately the size of a breadbox, including the tail.
Weight: Possibly eight pounds.
Species/Pokédex Type: Beretpuppy Pokémon
Evolves into: "Ruffled Dog" at Level 16
Habitat: Similar to prairie dogs and coyotes---grassy plains and specifically prairies. In PF, probably the most prairie-like areas in the Bastion Plains of Route B.
Design basis/Inspiration source: Prairie dogs, berets, coonskin caps (which frontiersmen like Davy Crockett were often erroneously depicted to wear)
Other comments: Possible moves for the “Beret Dog” include Growl, Bite, Lick, Sand-attack and Odor Sleuth.
Prairet's Pokédex entry:
Despite playful looks, it is stern and hard to faze. It expresses indifference by scratching itself. (100)
-_-_-_-
It incapacitates foes by rapidly scratching dust twisters out of its fur, forcing them to flee. (96)
(Note: the dust twisters are Sand-Attack in tornado form, manifesting as such to allude to the twister-prone conditions of the American plains. It cannot---naturally, anyway---learn Twister.)
Coyoneer (COYOte + piONEER) “Ruffled Dog”
Type: Normal
Gender Ratio: 50/50
Gender differences: None.
Egg group: Ground
Special Ability: Possibly Limber
Height: The Ruffled Dog’s head, when it is upright, meets approximately the height of someone’s knee, (two feet, three feet?)
Weight: twenty pounds.
Species/Pokédex Type: BLACKTIP (referring to its black-tipped tail) Pokémon
Evolves into: "Explorer Coyote" at Level 32
Habitat: Similar to its pre-evolution.
Design basis/Inspiration Source: Its occasionally upright stance resembles that of a standing or alert prairie dog, and it also has resemblances to a domesticated dog, particularly pronounced with its ‘panting’ tongue outside of its mouth. When upright, its forelimbs are positioned similarly to that of a dog, as they are in a curled position in front of it instead of hanging by its sides in a human-like manner. When upright, it supports itself with its tail held out like a tripod----so, like Squirtle or Pikachu, it runs on all fours. The black tip of its tail resembles that of the black-tipped prairie dog, as well as the black tip on the tail of their predator, the black-footed ferret.
Coyoneer's Pokédex entry:
It lives in burrows, but does not make its own. Instead, it enlarges abandoned Furret dens. (91)
-_-_-_-
It often acts exaggeratedly enthusiastic and cheery. However, its true emotions are more composed. (98)
Possible moves:
Odor Sleuth
Crokoyote (davy CROcKett + cOYOTE) “Explorer Coyote”
Type: Normal
Gender Ratio: 50/50
Gender differences: None.
Egg group: Ground
Special Ability: Guts
Height: Approximately 5' 4.6" (164.1 cm) in height.
Weight: Perhaps 101 pounds.
Species/Pokédex Type: Intrepid Pokémon
Habitat: It can be similar to its pre-evolution, however it does live in some desert areas, like coyotes do.
Design basis/Inspiration Source: Pioneers and frontiersmen, coyotes
Other comments: In its original artwork, it looked unimpressed and even a little bored, with a slightly hunched posture representing such. Its angular muzzle is similar to the “square-jawed” quality. Its arms hang by its sides, like humans’ do, and it is capable of competently walking on two legs. It can drop onto all fours for more speed, however, although it is typically seen on two legs.
Crokoyote's Pokédex entry:
It is able to dodge and subdue most foes by switching stances from two legs to four in combat.(94)
-_-_-
Its ease in subduing opponents instills a bored and unimpressed look. It prefers challenging tasks.(99)
(Initially I was thinking of making it Ground-type, but since they possessed so little relation to the ground, I decided not to. Even if they were based on burrowing prairie dogs, I could not imagine them having enough of an affinity with the ground to be Ground-type.)
