***
From time beyond memory, humans have enjoyed, and sometimes suffered from, the ability to dream. However, this has not been always the case. For eons, the dimension known as the Dream World, whose origins are shrouded in mystery, existed as a separate realm parallel to our own. During that time, it remained undisturbed by outside forces, and peace reigned supreme. However, the calm was halted by the appearance of a creature that found a way to travel back and forth between both worlds. That creature was a pokémon, and its name was Darkrai.
Nobody is sure in which of the dimensions this pokémon originated, but its interference opened a portal that linked the real world with the dream realm permanently, granting ancient humans access to it, albeit only in their sleep. The human race commenced to visit the realm, its thoughts flooding the place, shaping the virgin land in its own world's image. During their journeys to the land of dreams, people brought their hopes and ambitions along with them, but also their fears. And those fears were so strong, and the nightmares they provoked so powerful, that they stayed in the realm after the people had awakened. And by the dimension’s mysterious inner workings, those energies gathered, and in ambiguous shape they slumbered.
In the meantime, Darkrai had found enjoyment in tampering with people’s dreams. But by doing so repeatedly, it unknowingly unleashed the primal fear that had lain dormant within, giving the negative energies a new shape, that of a pokémon. This event proved catastrophic, as the creature's presence caused the sleep of people everywhere to be flooded with nightmares, and the terror spread to the real world as well causing ruin and destruction. Scared by what it had done, Darkrai tried to quell the newborn beast, but to no avail. Then, in desperate search for help, it appealed to Cresselia, a pokémon it had been in conflict with before. Together, they set out to confront the monster once again.
Even with their forces combined, the might of the dream beast, fuelled recursively by the raw terror created by its very existence, proved to be too much for them to handle. However, when it seemed that all hope was lost, the heat of the battle drew the attention of two presences that, like the monster before them, had been slumbering in the Dream World after being formed subconsciously by the minds of men. Their arrival, a sign of humanity's will to fight against its own creation, seemed to affect the raging beast, disorienting it. However, without a physical form there was little they could do to actually stop it. Then it occurred to Cresselia that, just as Darkrai had caused the lingering fear to take shape, she could try to repeat the feat with the newcomers. So she appealed to all her will and, touching the strange energies, she performed a miracle.
Embodying our intelligence and wisdom, Cognimech appeared and assessed the situation. Right next to it, Drakoniric spread its wings in defiance: our hope and emotions were its driving force. Together, they were able to vanquish the beast and dispel all the nightmares it had created; humanity could finally dream in peace again. But the danger was far from gone, as the nightmarish pokémon could not be destroyed: for better or worse, it was part of the human psyche and its demise would bring about madness. So it was decided that Drakoniric and Cognimech would stand guard, forever vigilant should the original Dream Beast, Nightmera, wake up again.
As for the fates of Darkrai and Cresselia, it is said that in the aftermath of the fight both rivals established a truce and reached an agreement: from that moment on, Darkrai wouldn’t be able to bother the dreams of humans except in moonless nights, for the moonlight was Cresselia’s essence, and the moonlit lands were her domain. With the dispute settled, both departed to unknown locations, leaving the Dream World under the care of its new guardians forevermore.
