That's because there are mitochondria in every animal cell. Mitochondria can't be Homo sapiens & Salamandra salamandra & Canis lupus all at the same time. That's why we call it mitochondria instead of every animal's scientific name.
@sov: How do you figure these names out?

Wait, so.. you're saying that any bacteria in only one type of animal is that animal? For example, the Komodo Dragon has a special bacteria in its mouth - some scientists argue it's a new enough strain to be its own species. YEt... it's not called Varanus komodoensis. It's its own species.

I didn't say anything about that. You sounded shocked that Coolsteph didn't call mitochondria Homo sapiens. So, I explained why she didn't. It's because it's found in every animal, so calling it one animal would mean you'd have to call it every other one too.

So she's saying that bacteria don't count as their own species - the ones in humans' guts - since they can't live without humans and vice-versa. But then she addresses mitochondria by its name instead of homo sapiens - I was pointing out the contradiction. Of course you call mitochondria mitochondria and not homo sapiens - I was pointing that out, and why Bulbsaur's bulb is a different thing than the animal itself for exactly that reason.

It's kind of strange that each species also has its own unique genus. But hey, it's Pokemon, it would be boring if two evolution chains look exactly the same except one has some marking on who knows where on its body or has a different color scheme, ISN"T THAT RIGHT, DIGIMON?!?!? :P

Well, I am trying to support the argument that Bulbasaur and its bulb are the same homogeneous, amalgamate organism, not that they share the same genes, in case I confused you. With mitochrondia, I was trying to make an example of something that was originally a separate, different organism integrating itself into the systems of another organism, considered a part of the organism but separate in origins. Like an arm, if it were originally from something other than the organism it is now connected to. But, since this statement seems not be supported by the rest of you, we might as well go with the easier-to-explain routes.

The first dex entry that bulbasaur ever had ever was "A strange seed was planted on its back at birth. The plant sprouts and grows with this Pokemon." See, the difference here is that Mitochondria have been integrated into cells for many million years. This plant on bulbasaur's back has been there only since birth. So these two things work together in harmony, but they were born in different places. They have different genes. I think that means we can say they are separate species.

But Pokemon and Science are brutal kismeses and the more I think about this the more my brain hurts so I am probably going to stop contributing.

Now... I feel that pavidus is the wrong root - we need something talking about really strong venom or something. And I think Rattata should have something about big teeth instead of being angry.

Pavidus means "to strike fear into", which is what Ekans and Arbok do, according to most of their dexes/card texts/etc. I suppose for Rattata we could change it to Rattus gigadentus... Anyways, next five:

Are the Nidorans really hamsters? I've never really understood what animal they are supposed to be, but I never figured hamsters.
Also, since I like Latin so much, mind if I start on another generation? I was going to work on the 3rd generation if you don't mind.

You do realize that Oddish already has a scientific name? I guess ours could be different, but I think it's worth considering. I'll start Generation II Pokemon.

I bolded all the things we need to work on. A major thing I see happening is an over-fusing of the two words. "Bubomnis" for example; we can no longer see that "omnis" is short for "insomnis". In fact, "omnis" means "all/total". "Psychicum" is also very... incorrect. Instead of inventing a Latin-esque word, try existing Latin words which fit to what you're trying to do. Instead of "psychicum", try the more simplistic and still Latin "psyche" meaning "mind" (before I get bombarded with comments of "NO! THAT'S GREEK YOU SO-AND-SO!", I'd like to point out that many, and I do mean many words in Greek became cognates (same word meaning the same thing but in a different language) in Latin). I've provided a list of alternatives, which you may accept or reject; they're here only to serve as help.
