Jhonen stretched luxuriously, yawning as he sat up and tossed the sheets aside. It was a new morning, and an important one at that. Having finally dealt with all the business of moving from Johto to Bombur, he'd finally been approved for entry into the Bombur league. Today he'd go and receive a Pokemon and begin training it up for the Inter-League Championships. After all, since his previous Pokemon had been taken away by the Johto League before they banned him, he was now well behind Matthew in terms of Pokemon strength.

Jumping out of bed, Jhonen got ready and then headed up the ladder, flipping the hatch open and jumping out onto the deck of his small yacht, currently moored in the Anchore Port. It was a sunny day, perfect for the beginning of a new Pokemon journey, and the yacht was all set for long-term residence at Anchore Port. Clambering down the mooring rope to the dockside, Jhonen headed to the lab for his new Pokemon.

"Yo, professor, you about?" he hollered as he slid the door open casually with his foot.

Pokémon Factory Worker

There was a small crash from a nearby room. Scuffling could be heard, then young man with disheveled blond hair in a lab coat poked his head out, looking a bit dazed. "Oh, a visitor. Be with you in a moment," the man said, ducking back into the room.

There was more shuffling and then the man came back out with a box in hand, filled to the brim with pokeballs. He put the box on a table next to a machine with nine pokeballs in it before turning his attention back to Jhonen. "Now for the introductions," the man began. "My name is Aaron. I am Professor Idaho's assistant and am in charge of his lab while he is away. I have to say I don't have very many visitors your age, so what could I do for you?"

Jhonen looked at the confused-looking man, who couldn't have been too much older than he was. He waved his hand dismissively, throwing an envelope over to Aaron with the other.

"Long story bro, but the short version is 'Jhonen, move back to Go, do not collect 200 dollars'" he summed up. "The Bombur League have it all in that letter there. After all, you're technically free to start a trainer journey whenever you wish," he added.

Jhonen walked into the main lab room, gazing at the Pokeballs. He walked over to them, then turned around, grinning confidently.

"Alright then Aaron, let's get official business out of the way. Allocate me a Pokemon so we can fight already, I'm getting rusty!" he laughed.

Aaron opened the letter and skimmed it. He frowned and then said, "Well, I suppose everyone needs a new lease on life. All right the pokeballs are over here. You have a choice of the grass-starters Youthistle, Holliguana, and Nutreed; the fire-starters Comolten, Xoskilltn, and Agunni; the water-starters Sukus, Ninemone, and Cherripo; and, if your brave, you can choose a completely random pokemon. You won't what it is until you release. Anyway, choose which pokemon you would like, send it out, and then when you've met your new pokemon, return it and place it on this machine."

Jhonen bypassed the nine starter pokemon and went straight for the tenth pile, the random Pokemon. Starters were bred specifically for beginning trainers, and he was no beginner. He'd take his luck on a random pokemon.

He picked up one of the balls, weighing it in his hand thoughtfully. The Pokeball clinked against the metal parts of his glove, and Jhonen reflected on how he hadn't used a regular Pokeball for quite some time. He'd always been an Ultra Ball guy once he'd been able to afford it. But here he was, back to basics.

"Alright, this feels good. A random pokemon is a real adventure!" he added as he clicked open the Pokeball. Dazzling white light burst out as his Pokemon formed in front of him.

Suggestions Board Manager

It very quickly became apparent that this was no starter. The pokémon stood a meter high, and had some horizontal size, too...and the light resolved itself into the shape of a horse. Jhonen had heard a thing or two about a smoky grey horse pokémon in Bombur...Equin, something...but when the light faded, he saw that his new pokémon was actually more familiar to him than that. It was the Fire-type Ponyta!

Jhonen took a step back, slightly surprised to see such a large pokemon appear as his starter. He eyed over the Ponyta, then moved forward to inspect the Pokemon more closely. Running his hands over the coat, leaning in to observe the flaming mane, and feeling the muscles under the pelt, Jhonen gently and carefully inspected the little horse, which stood there patiently, if a little restlessly.

Finishing the quick inspection, Jhonen clapped his hands once, expressing his satisfaction.

"Hey you, you're a pretty strong little horse, hey? At least I won't need a bicycle now," he added as he patted Ponyta's nose. "I think I'll call you Aeos, the firey steed of Helios," he concluded. Aeos snorted gently, nuzzling into Jhonen's hand.

Jhonen returned Aeos to its Pokeball, and then looked around, spotting the analysing machine that was common to all Pokemon Labs. He slotted Aeos' pokeball into the machine, waiting for the data to appear on-screen.

Lowers opponent's ATTACK ability by one stage.

"Very good," Aaron said. "Now if you would return your Ponyta and follow me. We need to do one more thing before you can leave."

Aaron led Jhonen into a room with a large grass field. A battle arena was marked out in the center of the field with white flowers which got sunlight from the opened glass ceiling. Aaron walked to the far side of the arena and shouted, "Your last task is your first gym battle!"

Jhonen rolled his eyes at Aaron's dramatic demeanor. He'd clearly gotten too used to impressing ten-year-old children. Jhonen had already been aware of the fact that Aaron was the gym leader, as it wasn't hard to find public information on the gym leaders if one decided to do a little research.

"Come on out Aeos!" he commanded, the ball bursting open in flame as the horse reared up and whinnied proudly. Jhonen was already planning, trying to remember that he was handling a low-level pokemon and not the stronger beasts he'd been used to handling previously.

"Alright Aaron, let's go!" he called out as Ponyta charged at the gym leader's Pokemon.

"Aeos, use Tackle!"

Pokémon Factory Worker

Ponyta collided with Nevermore just as he was released by Aaron. The surprise caught Nevermore off guard and sent him tumbling along the ground until he stopped by Aaron's feet. Aaron helped his tiny pokemon to its feet and said, "Don't let it get you down, Nevermore. Use Peck!"

Nevermore let out a caw of agreement and flew toward Aeos, his beak aglow.

Aoes took the blow stubbornly, rearing up on hind legs as the small bird pecked at the flaming pony. It fell back onto all four feet as Jhonen smirked, confident that at the levels they were fighting at a single Tackle from Aeos would have pushed the Nevermore into relatively damaged territory. He had plenty of experience with battling, and willingly traded the blow from the bird for a close reach and a fast Tackle that would be difficult to avoid at such ranges. Even with the bird's Same Type Attack Bonus Jhonen was more than certain his higher leveled Ponyta would come out better off.

Aeos hit Nevemore with his Tackle, sending the bird back a few feet. Nevermore got up, ready for Aaron's next command. "Tackle the ponyta back!" he said.

On his tiny legs Nevermore charged at Aeos.

Jhonen looked surprised as the small black bird flew in for another Tackle, striking Aeos with the charge. Jhonen mused that for it to have survived two hits from his Ponyta the Nevermore had to have been both lucky and defensively-natured.

"Well, it may have managed to take two Tackles, but I know it won't survive a third!" Jhonen announced as Aeos wheeled around, its mane flaring up as it charged at the bird.

"Finish Nevermore off with another Tackle!"

Jhonen's musing was correct. Nevermore was sent flying back again by Aeos' attack. His wings sprawled out on the ground and his two little feet sticking up in the air, Nevermore was clearly knocked out by the tackle.

"Well done, Nevermore," Aaron said as he returned Nevermore. Now addressing Jhonen Aaron said, "Don't get too excited I still have one more pokemon."

From Aaron's second pokeball came a Ledyba. He was ready and determined to battle. Waiting tentatively for his command, Ledyba spun energetically in the air on his buzzing wings. "This pokemon is pretty powerful, Ledyba. Use Growl to soften him up a bit!" commanded Aaron.

Ledyba, like Nevermore before, let out a growl. This one a bit more chirpy.
