I think it would be more cushioning than an exoskeleton that protects it, and it didn't mention anywhere that it can glide through the air (despite the fact that this entire basis of the design I made was something that could glide through the air). Also I think you mean from not form. Finally, I have a sneaking suspicion that they don't just throw themselves from trees. That would only be at tops 30 or 40 feet depending on the tree. I think the ones you originally saw were just younger, less experienced ones. The older ones probably jump off of cliffs to get a greater thrill.

Didn't you say in the beginning that this pokémon doesn't evolve?  So the Plane-like Moth you mentioned earlier was probably one of the older ones who was skilled enough that they could ride on wind using pieces of tree bark grasped between their legs (The front and back legs on top of the bark and the middle legs underneath, or vice versa).  You said it had similar coloration and a Grudive's back is brown, so it would be understandable to mistake brown pieces of bark for wings at a distance.   As for what that Grudive was doing, it was probably looking out for and teaching the younger ones, while the rest of the adults glide off some cliffs.  Now the only remaining question is why would it be holding pieces of bark in its legs... the answer I have for you there would be, it was just showing off.
