Zephyr found himself in a fairly small, bustling city full of people. He looked around the city that stretched in front of him, wondering what to do next. There seemed to be many familiar things in Prism City, such as a Pokemon Center and a Pokemart, as well as many residential buildings. After asking around a bit, he learned that there wasn't a gym in Prism City, so he decided to move on, thinking this town couldn't help him at all.

At the outskirts of the city, he found the road that lead out into Route Beta. He began walking down the path that seemed very much like Route Alpha, until he came across a big problem preventing him from continuing. There were large boulders strewn across the Route that had fallen down from a nearby mountain. Many people were standing around the obstacle, talking like there wasn't a problem at all. There were even a few picnic tables set up around. He walked up to a woman who was talking to a friend. "Excuse me." She turned towards him.

"Yes? What do you want?" Her slightly aggressive response shocked Zephyr, and he cleared his throat before answering. "I was just wondering why there are so many people out here." She raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms. "You're not from here, are you? Ever since these boulders came off the mountain and blocked Beta here, we've been cut off from the rest of the world. We don't have the equipment to get rid of 'em, so we just decided to deal with it." Zephyr looked confused at this answer. "But why are so many people out here?" She sighed, obviously tired of Zephyr's questions. "For some reason, these boulders have driven away the wild Pokemon. Must have done something to the local habitats or somethin'. The landscape out here is beautiful, so it's become a bit of a local hangout. Now go away, you're quite the nuisance." She turned back to her friend and continued talking as if nothing had happened.

Zephyr looked at the boulders again, feeling defeated. After just one city, his journey had ended. By nature, of all things. He sighed and began walking back towards Prism City. "Hey you, boy!" The sudden call made Zephyr turn around and look for the voice. "Me, here!" The voice was coming from a bulky man in a leather jacket and shorts, an odd combination indeed. "Sorry 'bout my eavesdroppin', but I overheard your conversation with Miss Wells there. Don't worry about her, she's just grumpy." He chuckled to himself, sounding something like Santa Claus. "Anyway, do you need to get by these boulders here?" Zephyr nodded. Maybe his journey hadn't ended yet.

"Well, most people don't know this, but there's been a rumor about a man out in the woody mountains west of Prism City. I've heard that he's figured out a way to get by the boulders." The big man shrugged his broad shoulders. "Maybe it's true, maybe it isn't. But from what I know, it's the best chance you've got." Zephyr pondered the man's suggestions, then nodded again. "Alright then. I'll go see if I can find him. Does anyone know where he is exactly?" The man laughed again, deep and loud. "It's a rumor, boy. Nobody knows where."

On the way back to the road, Zephyr heard rustling in the bushes near him. He turned toward the bush when a small weasel-like Pokemon jumped out of the bushes at him. He quick moved to the side to avoid it, and it hit the ground on all four feet. It skidded to a stop and turned to face him again. "Spa! Sparret!" Zephyr pulled out Agunni's Pokeball and released it, not an easy thing to do in the dense forest. Agunni appeared floating a few feet off the ground, somewhat sleepy. "Wake up Agunni! Use Smokescreen!"

Agunni perked up and blew out a thick cloud of black smoke, covering the small Sparret. The ferret Pokemon, not being able to see anything, randomly started kicking up sand, hoping to hit the genie. However, the Sand Attack completely missed Agunni, instead hitting Zephyr. He rubbed his eyes to get the sand out, and ordered, "Pound! Now!" Agunni flew through the smoke right in front of the Sparret and hit it square in the face with his hand.

The Sparret was thrown aside, obviously not strong enough to resist even a simple Pound. Zephyr took one of his newly bought Pokeballs and caught the Sparret, his face beaming. Now he had something to use Rock Smash. Zephyr took old Thomas's HM out of his backpack and put it in his Pokedex. He held it up to his new Sparret's Pokeball and pressed the Transfer Move Disc button. The button on the Pokeball glowed for a second, then faded. Zephyr returned the Pokeball to his belt and continued back to Route Beta.

When Zephyr arrived at the rock blockage, he found the same scene: people at picnic tables eating, kids playing games, and women still standing and talking. He released his Sparret onto the ground, and the ferret Pokemon looked around, slightly worn from the battle. Zephyr sprayed a few Potions on him, and the Sparret perked up again. "Alright Sparret. Let's smash a rock further closer to the forest so we don't disturb the people. His Sparret nodded and rushed over to a boulder many times bigger than he was. Sparret glowed with a faint orangeish aura, then slammed head-first into the giant boulder.

Zephyr started getting tired a bit into the walk to Rubyd City, so he decided to take a break and release his Pokemon. He found a small grove of trees off the path, with a small stump in the middle. After letting out Agunni, Magtie, Midgellet, and Sparret, he leaned against the stump to rest. He absentmindedly took out the TM Chuck had given him at looked at it. "Iron Tail, huh?" He looked at his Pokemon playing by a tree. Midgellet was being chased by Sparret around the tree, while Agunni and Magtie flew around, smacking and clawing each other in mock-fighting. He figured that Sparret would be the best choice for this TM, but he decided to keep it for later.

He then heard noises coming from behind him. He sat upright and shifted himself to look for the source of the sound, and saw a small, green Pokemon hobbling around the trees. It looked tired, and possibly injured. It saw Zephyr looking at him, and jumped back in shock. But after seeing that he was no harm, the small Budew walked up to him and held out its red leaf. Zephyr looked at it, and noticed a deep cut in the leaf, most likely caused by a predator in the woods. Zephyr took a Potion out of his backpack and sprayed it on the cut, and it quickly closed up. The Budew hopped up and down in joy, happy that its pain had been eased.

It then looked at Zephyr, then at the Pokemon around the tree, who had stopped playing and where now all staring at the Budew. Somewhat frightened, it slid behind Zephyr. He chuckled and stood up. "Do you want to come with us?" The Budew peered around Zephyr's legs at the other Pokemon, then reluctantly nodded. He then took out a Pokeball and tapped the Budew, who was absorbed into the now-filled Pokeball. He turned to his other Pokemon and returned them too. He now knew that he was more than ready for the first gym, and he started walking back to Route Beta, when something pricked him in the back of his right leg.

In pain, he turned around and saw a Roserade followed by two Roselias. They glared at him, and he realized that he had taken one of their children. "I'm sorry, but your Budew was hurting. It agreed to come with me, and I need to go." The Roserade, obviously the leader of the group, shot another Poison Sting at his leg. He moved out of the way, then bent down and took the purple thorn out of his leg. He decided to let the Budew talk to its family before leaving. He took out Budew's Pokeball and Budew materialized in front of him. It looked in shock at the three rose-like Pokemon, and quickly moved behind Zephyr. He didn't know what was wrong, but he started to get the feeling that it was the Roserade that had caused Budew's cut, not a predator.
