You are correct, but not 100% accurate. I think it's partially the other way around. Colonial organisms are the same species, but need each other to survive. Symbiotic organisms are more diverse, some may live independently of one another (Clownfish and Sea Anemones), but some need each other to survive (Leaf-cutter ants and the species of fungi they cultivate).

But we really should pick a specific idea for this to work. Do we want a Siphonophore pokemon? Or a specific pair of symbiotic species?

The Portuguese Man of War is out, even jellyfish-like creatures are getting bland now. I suggested the Erenna up there, it's essentially a chain of organisms with different functions at different sections, the front part is dedicated to locomotion and such, and the rest is mostly for feeding using tentacles.

Wait a minute- what if it started out as three separate Pokemon species, but if they all leveled up at a certain area, they combined into a new Pokemon?

That would a little weird for a creature that's supposed to live chained to each other for their lifespan. I think this will come out better as a standalone.
In other matters, I think I've come up with an idea for it's ability. Since basically it is a chain of fully functioning conscious creatures, it would be pretty hard to make it faint all at once with attacks, unless the attacks spread out. So I propose the ability Colonial (or maybe Supercolony): Single target attacks against this pokemon can only deal damage at a maximum of 1/4 (25%) of the user's maximum HP. This does not apply to One-Hit-KO moves.
For example, you attack it with Energy Ball which would otherwise faint it. You need to hit it 4 times before this pokemon finally faints.

Well, I think this ability is a bit overpowered, this Pokemon would need horrible stats to use it, otherwise it would be clearly uber.

I agree that Supercolony is a better name, but it is quite OP'ed. Perhaps it can deal a maximum of 1/2 the max hp instead?

But it wouldn't apply to moves that hit multiple targets in double battles (like surf)

It says single target, so not, it won't apply. What about multi-hit moves? They could techincally hit all three at once...

Also, would it be in three blocks, so if the pokemon has 31/90 or 60/90 and it does 1000 damage it will have 30 health left either way or would it do a maximum of one third damage?

It means that the health can go down no more than one third of full health. If it had 31/60 health, it could at minimum have 1 health left, because it would take 30 damage, one third of 90.

Allright. What type would it be? I'm thinking that, as was stated previously, it could be magic type. depending on its actual construction, it could be some other type, too.

I vote for Water as the primary type since it is an aquatic creature after all. Competitive battlers out there may be able to consider this as a "bulky water".

I would go for Water/Magic. Like Cacapulse said, it's aquatic, and Magic was the original suggestion, after all.
