This is an outrage. I don't like the new names. They don't fit the starters at all. What kind of moron came up with Snivy? Snake and Ivy aren't similar at all. I may as well nickname my Snivy by its Japanese name. I like it better.

Well, EO, if you don't like the meaning of Snake and Ivy, you can always imagine that Snivy is actually a portmanteau of Snide and Ivy.

Personally, I like the names. Tepig is my least favorite, as it sounds more forced than Snivy or Oshawott, but I can deal with it.

I still wish that Pokémon referred to other languages besides English and Japanese for once, though. Greek could offer some very interesting names, like one of my own, Choblaze, or Zoirowl, or even Fyde! (To find the meanings of those, check out my topic in Creative Projects titled The Region of Illustration, Carai'ba!)

That´s quite a nice article you found there Xer0! I share the author´s point of view.

Anyway, one of the many advantages of speaking a native language different of english is that the names sound cool, or at least OK, most of the time. This doesn´t mean that we don´t have any criteria over their names; there is this game, Dragon Quest IX which has a monster called Malandril (malandrín = ne'er-do-well + mandril = mandrill) in spanish, I thought it was pretty creative, only in english it´s called Badboon... I was like, really game!? So that may happen with english pokémon names too, it just wasn´t the case this time for me, and besides is not like it´s any good to complain and rant.

Oshawott is mostly bad because there's a city called Oshawa not far from me and it's a truly dreadful place. Wotter, the most overused fanPokemon name ever, would've been less offensive.

The myriad of pig/bacon/fire puns and they went with Tepig. Let's hope that Pignition and Emboar are the other two or else there's no redeeming that line.

Smugleaf / Swagleaf / Smuglord forever!

Also RE: fossils I see no conceivable reason why the new fossils are in Water-3, an egg group full of invertebrates. It boggles!

Perhaps because Archaeopteryx might be speculated to be partly aquatic---a fossil specimen was found in a lagoon--- but generally is not an animal that lives purely in water, like dolphins, or is thought to be particularly water-associated, like otters. Besides, it would give more diversity to the egg group.

I thought the 4th Gen Pokemon names were annyoing! GRRR!!! Oshawott? Tepig? And my favorite starter got stuck with SNIVY?! We could've come up with much better names than this!

Sorry, guys! :P Just really pissed that Nintendo couldn't come up with good names.

Being aquatic even partially =/= not having a spine. That just seems like a mistake...

also snivy is a lot more acceptable when you imagine it being Snide + Ivy over Snake +Ivy

This is the first time I've updated my Yuku signature in at least 4 years. In fact, last time I updated it it wasn't even on Yuku. That is all

I thought Tepig (tepid + pig) was brilliant for a starter pokemon name. It fits perfectly with the fire pig theme. It's a short play-on-words that I really like. I'm tempted to go with Tepig first just because of the name.

I know I might get some flak for this comment but Smugleaf wasn't a good name and I prefer Snivy. The etymology of the name can be taken in a lot of directions as proven here.

The only name that disconcerted me was Oshawott. I understood the last part of the name (water + otter), but the first part seems strange. I can only hope that Oshawott's evolutions get names that make more sense to me.
