I agree with SoR perfectly - it's just as different as other split evos, such as Snorunt and its evos.

I think it's ability should be Illuminate instead of Sturdy, after all it uses the light to lure possible preys.

They don't have to have the same or close types to be counterparts. See Cranidos & Shieldon.

They're both fossils. I just don't see how angler fish & butterflyfish are alike in any way besides the typing of their evolutions. You could say that the Carvanha & Corphish lines are counterparts just because Crawdaunt & Sharpedo have the same type.

I always thought that if two pokemon had the same or similar types and they had the same nuber of evolutions, then they were considered counterparts (Bannette and Dusclops)

It's basically those and if they are opposites in games, e.g. Glameow & Stunky.

Excuse me? Of course it matters, the pokemon games are ever changing and the point is they are counterparts now. Besides, They seem like they could become counterparts to me (Lumineon and Lanturn) like Baltoy and Gulpin did.

The question is, how is this really relevant to this current suggestion? Can we keep on track guys?

Turntrench is likely going to either end up being an evo of either form in the Lanturn line, or it's own pokemon. Arguing about counterparts is neither here or there.

I think it's fine for Turntrench to evolve from Lanturn, like lightningrod wants it to. If Nintendo (or PF) ever lets Lanturn evolve into a peaceful creature, then Turntrench and that evolved form can simply both be alternate evolutions of Lanturn. That said, I'm perfectly fine with Turntrench evolving from Chinchou as well. I do think that Turntrench should be realted to the Chinchou line some way or another, though.
