After a moment the door was opened by a young man in a lab coat. "Well, hello there," he said warmly to the girl he found standing in front of the doorway. "Come on in. Can I help you with something?"

''Are you Professor Idaho?'' Steph asked, entering the lab with Sableye scampering beside her. ''I have a question for him about starter Pokémon.'' Steph tilted her head a little to look at the man---he looked a little like Professor Elm to her. Or, what pictures she saw of Professor Elm, since she was not able to go to Johto earlier.

"No, I'm not," Aaron replied. "Unfortunately Prof. Idaho has been called away for a bit. I am his aide, Aaron, and I'm taking care of the lab in his absence. I can also answer any questions you may have."

(In case anyone is wondering...I just like how remarkable their hair color is.)

"Thank you." Steph told the aide. "I have a problem---I wanted to start my Bombur journey as most Trainers do---starting with a conventional starter of the region---but my Sableye from my Hoenn journey wants to come with me, and is quite distraught in loneliness if he cannot. So, I plan on bringing him with me, but I am not sure if that is allowed here. Does it mean he counts as my starter?" Steph questioned Aaron. Suddenly Steph noticed something. "Professor Aaron, has anyone ever told you before that you are blond?" To say that his hair was "dazzling blond" would be over the top, even when she acted on an impulse for the comment. She liked to observe blond people, or rather admire their remarkable hair.

Aaron was surprised but the unexpected question about his hair, and after a moment's pause he chuckled. "Yes, I believe someone has mentioned that to me at some point," he commented lightly. Then he returned his attention to her previous question. "Yes, it is possible for you to bring your Sableye. Trainers who traveled first in other regions have, on occasion, brought one of their prior pokemon with them to act as a starter. If I may see your Trainer card and pokedex, I can get you registered for the League here."

(OOC: Approximately what level would you say Sableye is? I'd like to get an idea of how strong I should make the pokemon Aaron will battle with.)

(Sableye is Level 64, but for the purpose of realism here, he will operate as if on Level 13, a la Ash's Pikachu----who can defeat incredibly powerful opponents in one season, and be battered by a common, weak one in the next. Also...Nice save for Professor Aaron.)

Steph, glad that Professor Aaron would accept Sableye as a starter, and that he took her admiration for his blond hair well, rummaged for her Trainer Card. It was only a slight inconvenience that yoga pants did not have pockets, since it was only a brief pause for her to locate the Trainer Card and Pokédex in her bag.

Steph gave her Trainer Card and Pokédex to Professor Aaron, as Sableye squealed affably. "Sableye!"

(OOC: Either level will work, since Gym Leaders will adjust their teams to give you a suitable challenge. But if you decide to make him level 13, it would be best if you gave him attacks a Sableye would normally learn at that level, aside from maybe one or two Egg moves or TMs. So just to be completely sure: you wish to make him level 13?)

Aaron took the Trainer Card and Pokedex, then invited Steph inside the lab as he walked over to a computer. He worked at the computer for a couple minutes, typing away, scanning the card and transmitting some information between the computer and the pokedex. When he'd finished, he handed both objects back to the waiting Steph. "There you go, you're all cleared for the PFL! Now, I imagine you'd like to challenge the first Gym, which happens to be in this very town, and quite close. If you like, I can show you there," he said with a grin.

(actually, I would prefer not to give him a concrete level at this point---making him like Ash's Pikachu. Keeping him at level 64 would make sense on one level, but not on another. Considering I will probably be facing against a Ledyba and a Nevermore---which are not particularly powerful Pokémon---having a lower level would make sense.)

Steph took back her Trainer Card and Pokédex. "Yes, I would appreciate it if you would show me there---I would not know where the first Gym would be otherwise, sine I am not acquainted with this region's geography yet."

"I have read that Professor Idaho knows the first Gym Leader well," Steph commented, following Aaron to the Gym. "I also wonder what the Gym Leader's type specialty is. The book I was reading did not mention the subject."

(OOC: Alright, that makes perfect sense to me. Though since even level 13 is much stronger than Aaron's typical challengers, and closer to the level one would expect of someone challenging the second Gym, I'm planning on giving Steph a slightly more challenging opponent. After all, I did say that Gym Leaders will adjust their teams to give you a suitable challenge. )

Aaron nodded and gestured Steph to follow him. "Then please follow me, and we'll be there in no time," he said. He lead her toward the back of the lab, pausing briefly along the way to swap a pokeball he had in his pocket with one waiting on a rack in the lab. At the back of the lab there was a door, which Aaron opened and walked through. At first glance it seemed like the door opened to outside, since the ground was covered with grass and the sun was shining brightly. But on second glance, there were walls surrounding the area Aaron had just stepped into, although there was no ceiling. There was, however, rows of white flowers, which actually marked out the lines for a pokemon battlefield.

Turning to face Steph, Aaron announced, "Welcome to the first Gym! I am also the first Gym Leader, and I'm ready to fight whenever you are!"

(If the level Sableye learns Shadow Ball is too high to be feasible, we shall presume Steph taught him the move by TM)

Steph was momentarily surprised that Aaron, Professor Idaho's aide and Professor in absence, was the first Gym Leader. But, she did like Trainers that fought with unique battle strategies, and Aaron was sure to provide an interesting challenge. Besides, the sooner she defeated Aaron (or possibly vice-versa), the sooner she could get out of that dreadful bright sunlight.

"I choose you, Sableye!" Steph commanded, as Sableye hopped off her shoulder and onto the battlefield.

(EDIT: I noticed Aaron did not actually send out a Pokémon, and changed the post accordingly)

Aaron nodded, then tossed his pokeball onto the field. "Lets go, Nevermore!" he called as a small, dark-colored bird appeared. The bird stared at its opponent, sizing it up as it waited to begin.

It didn't have long to wait. "Let's start things off with a Leer," Aaron called.

His pokemon puffed up its feathers a bit to look more menacing as it gave a sharp look at its opponent.

(Sableye's claw attack can be interpreted as either Scratch or Fury Swipes, whichever one you prefer.)

Sableye, being a hardened battler, should not have been scared by Nevermore's Leer. Still, the move did its job, and Sableye, ruffled by the surprisingly intimidating Pokémon, took a step back.

"Sableye, claw Nevermore!"

Sableye ran forward to rake his claws across Nevermore's wing.

Nevermore squawked as Sableye's attack hit, then flapped the hurt wing to shake off a couple feathers that had been knocked loose from the attack.

"Now fly up and Peck it, Nevermore," Aaron said.

His pokemon nodded before hopping into the air and flapping its wings busily to ascend. When it had risen a few feet, it suddenly dive-bombed towards Sableye with its beak outstretched.

(Note, these are not actual attacks as much as techniques. But, it is feasible that Sableye could do this.)

Sableye was not able to dodge the attack---Nevermore's dive-bombing technique was too swift. Nevermore's beak impacted on the red gem of Sableye's chest, and Sableye stumbled back. "Sabl..." Perhaps the Leer Nevermore did before made Nevermore's subsequent attacks more effective on Sableye.

Sableye's claw attack did seem effective; a little more damage inflicted and Nevermore might have experienced more difficulty in ascending.

"Sableye, grab onto Nevermore's tail feathers!"

Sableye scampered forward to Nevemore before leaping out.

Nevermore squawked as Sableye grabbed into its tail feathers. It glanced over its shoulder and tugged away a bit, but not too hard; if any feathers were pulled loose, not only would it hurt but it would put Nevermore off-balance.

Aaron saw that Nevermore was in a difficult position. It would be very difficult for it to attack without hurting itself. "Give it another Leer," he said, hoping it would make the opponent back off.

Nevermore looked straight at Sableye and glared angrily at it.

(Note that you spelled "pulled" incorrectly.)

Sableye, frightened, closed his eyes, and despite his fear tried to steadfastly clench his fists on Nevermore's tail feathers, although in his fear, he would have wanted to release his grip. Sableye could feel Nevermore's piercing, accusatory gaze even through his eyelids, and whimpered. "Sableye..."

"Sableye..." Steph started to call, when she noticed Sableye was afraid from Leer . Steph decided to alter her strategy for Sableye's comfort.

"Sableye, release Nevermore, but stay close behind it."

(EDIT: fixed spelling mistakes. I could not resist.)

As soon as Nevermore felt Sableye's grip weaken, it leaped forward to free itself, though it lost a feather or two in its haste. It spun around to face Sableye, determined to keep its tail out of reach now.

"Good job, Nevermore! Now, Peck again," Aaron said.

His pokemon immediately dashed towards its opponent, beak at the ready.

"Tackle it from the side!" Steph commanded. Sableye scampered forward, trying to sidestep the dashing Nevermore and the beak spearing in front before launching himself at Nevermore's side. Nevermore's attack was earthbound---not flying. Steph's plan was working.

Sableye rammed into Nevermore, sending the bird crashing into the grass.

"Quick, put some distance between you with Pursuit," Aaron said.

Nevermore immediately hopped to its feet. Then, moving so swiftly it appeared to be little more than a dark blur, it struck at Sableye and dashed away, coming to rest several feet away.

(In the episode Ready, Willing, and Sableye, a Sableye floats up to the ceiling of the mine shaft. So, Sableye are capable of floating a little.)

"Sabl...."

Sableye was accruing more damage than Steph expected. Not even fighting Aaron's second Pokémon yet, Sableye looked tired. Fortunately, ground attacks would be easier to evade---or so Steph hoped. Suddenly, Steph remembered a technique she once heard that a Sableye could do. She never thought about asking if Sableye could do it, because her own Sableye never demonstrated the ability before. Still...it would be a tremendous advantage...

"Sableye, grab a hold of Nevermore again, then try floating!"

"Sableye?" Sableye was momentarily confused, since he never floated before. However, he did know that the technique was common to Ghost-type Pokémon, with himself probably included.
