Hey guys, haven't been on here for a while, awesome updates btw and I am looking forward to re-suggesting some of my old stuff.

I'm just curious - I got into spriting a bit when i used to go on here, and i want to start again and get some practise, but I don't know what size the new DPPt sprites are, and there don't seem to be any up-to-date spriting guides around. The most recent is still from the third generation. Any help here would be appreciated.

One last thing as well. I used to use paint, for lack of a better option, but i recently got Fireworks. Is it comparatively better in any way? Because it kills my crappy old computer every time I open it.

Anyway, good to see you guys again, and hopefully come the suggestion opening (and hopeful lack of backlog) I will be more active on these boards once again.

Welcome back, ninjamatt. To answer some of your questions, the size of D/P sprites is 80x80 pixels. I've heard Bonzai uses Fireworks for sprites, but I at least keep using MS Paint. As for a guide, I'm afraid that I can't provide you with any pointers, because I'm still stuck at RSE-style myself.

As for the style, for my DP sprites I often just add a bit more shading and get ambitious with the outline shading - you can try using alternating colors in the outline that seem like they don't go well together because the large size balances it. Of course, they're bigger too.
ShinE is probably your best bet though.

Cheers for the advice guys, good to be back as well. And yeah, I would appreciate some comment from ShinE as well.

As for the Paint/Fireworks problem, I now think I'll go for fireworks. I tried some splicing today on paint and i find that I have to undo a LOT, and paint only goes back like 4 steps, which often leaves me with a massive problem that I can't fix. But thanks for the size and spriting advice, I'll give it a bit of a go right now.

Windows Vista's Paint is able to undo more than 4 steps. Paint is also my program of choice; I have no experience with Fireworks, though.

So, yes, 80x80 pixels. Generally speaking, the DP sprites actually use less shading and highlights than the RSE ones and they have also banned the use of color dithering. Outlines seem to be darker too, with body parts that are in the distance featuring lighter outlines, instead of the other way around which characterized RSE sprites.

Just some tidbits; maybe they help you out ^-^

Oh wow, That'll help me a lot too. I should have paid more attention...
Wait. No color dithering? Why?!

EDIT: ShinE, I just looked up some sprites, and there's definitely dithering on some.

There certainly not as much color dithering as the RSE sprites but there still is some. I use photoshop, but I haven't done sprites in awhile.

Yes, there is dithering in some places. Definitely not as much though. If it were banned though... Ugh.

Yeah, there's still some dithering, but so much less than the RSE ones, that I think it'd be best to use dithering as less as possible in order to give your sprite a DP-style look. It also means shading and highlighting sprites has become more difficult than before, since dithering was often the easy way out.

Yeah, I'm gonna miss dithering... It was especially useful for fish.

Well, even though dithering made spriting easier, I do think that sprites look cleaner (and better) without the dithering.

I suppose - but take ShinE's horn for example. The dithering lends it a great texture along with the shading.

ShinE's horn features no dithering; it's actually lines on the horn, so the "dithering" you see is a very complicated outline ;P It's not that great, but I stuck with tradition, since my very first version of ShinE featured this type of horn.
