In Jurassic Park, a book written by Michael Crichton and later adapted into a movie, John Hammond took dinosaur blood out of petrified mosquitoes in amber. He then patched the gaps of the DNA with Frog DNA, and created... a dinosaur. Now, that's not possible because of obvious reasons (Dinosaur + Frog ≠ Dinosaur. Dinosaur + Frog = Weird mutated thing. Also, ancient DNA have never been found to have more than 250 complete base pairs, while an entire dinosaur needs a few billion)

They did it in Pokémon too. Y'know, when you take the Old Amber to the Cinnabar Lab and get Aerodactyl?

What do you think they used to patch the Aerodactyl DNA? Poliwhirl DNA, maybe?

They pretty much do the same thing with all of the fossils: take out some DNA and turn it into a newborn Pokemon. That's why you always get the Fossil Pokemon at lvl. 5, I presume. But then again, maybe the Pokemon world is more scientifically advanced than us. I mean, they have little balls that turn creatures into storable light. And then the little balls shrink somehow. It would be safe to guess they were able to create an entire lifeform out of a bit of DNA.

Actually, you get the fossil pokemon at lvl. 20 in R/S/E and D/P/Pt. But that's just me being nitpicky.

But I agree- the pokemon world has some pretty sick technology. I mean, you can take creatures and enclose them in tiny balls, and then store them virtually! If I could only do that with my stuff...

Actually, strictly speaking, the frog is very impossible, even as a mutation result. The only thing we have discovered the ability to splice into other RNA is bacteria RNA, and it's because you do a "jagged break" (can't remember technical term) in the GATC sequences, then since they only pair with their corresponding piece, we place another jagged strand in. tI think I might be wrong about this, but I'm fairly sure only RNA patching is possible at the moment.

From my (albeit little) knowledge in genetics, I do believe you are correct elementalpenguin, although we call them "sticky ends" in our Biology class.

Sticky ends! That's it. Thanks Alpaquick. I believe there's a reason about why DNA splicing is not feasible... Oh yes!
All creatures that do possess DNA are far too complex past the embryo stage to take a specific piece of DNA that you know has the right coding on each end, since they mutate and grow after birth. It is possibly feasible in the early zygote stage when the fetus is not developed and it is still a single cell organism. However, since bacteria are small, we know where each strand is located more or less, or can find out by process of elimination and tedious work, giving us the ability to find pieces we want.

Would it be possible to insert similar DNA through an amniocentesis? Most likely it wouldn't work, but if the species are similar enough it might work.

It's true about what EP said, but I was talking about how the Cinnabar lab scientists do it. After all, we're not sure the level of technology that Game Freak intended them to have, so patching a DNA may be possible.
My main point was that finding a sufficient amount of DNA to replicate a full organism in fossils or amber is not very possible, at least to our knowledge.

Anywhoo, assuming they found a way to splice ancient DNA with modern ones, what Pokémon do you think they used? Maybe Scyther was used to recreate Kabutops?

Actually, it would have to be something more akin to Kabuto (perhaps Shelgon?). I think they used Tangela for Lileep and Corphish for Anorith.

@Drufle - yes, I believe it's possible, but we haven't tried it for fear of risk to the mother. First we need to develop test-tube babies for real. Now, onto the main topic.
For the Helix fossil, we know the shell existed as the fossil, so presumably something tentacle-y would work... Octillery? Then Dome, I believe Scyther actually does work, provided the DNA would be hypothetically stored until evolution. Evolution sort of throws a wrench in the works. Tangela and Corphish seem spot on to me. For Cranidos... I have no idea. And for Shieldon... again no idea.

I'm liking all of those except Octillery. I'm not sure whta an octopus has in common with an ammonite besides the tentacles. My bet for that would be one on the Tentas (as in Tentacool/cruel)

Ammonites were Cephalopods, as are Octopodes, hence Octillary would actually be the closest match to Onamyte of any (known) current pokémon. Tentacool would actually be much more distant.

If we were to go that way, even Slugma are closer than Tentacool. Mollusca, anyone?

Ammonites always had tentacles. Maybe something not tentacley?

I bet in the Pokemon world they have devices that can also scan the DNA and show what will be cloned from it. Like the cloner in Mewtwo Strikes Back. Just a hunch. Anyway I'd say Scyther is a match to Kabuto/Kabutops.
