The theory states that the spacial vacuum we live in is only a metastable sector of space. This means that it's at risk of collapsing into a lower state of energy if disturbed by quantum tunneling, or substantial quantities of high energy particles. If this were to happen, a bubble would be nucleated containing a vacuum of less energy. It would expand rapidly at a speed close to the speed of light, converting the state of all matter, energy, and space time in its path.

To put it simply, at any given point in time, our entire solar system and all structures within it could be destroyed instantaneously, with no warning.

I have had a slight case of acrophobia ever since I jumped off a swing when I was 8 and broke my arm. I'm also afraid of roller coasters, but I guess that's overlapping.

After all, it is merely a theory. The other possible way for that to happen is for a Particle Accelerator to create energies of 10^18 eV, and currently we only have the technology to produce 10^12 eV. MAy not seem like much difference, but that's a lot of zeroes we're talking about. Particle accelerators will have to increase about one MILLION times in power to make this theory slightly possible to happen, and since these atom smashers take many years to create, it probably won't happen in our lifetime. Just look at the LHC. It "died" after its first run.
In fact, we aren't even sure if our space as we know it has zero, positive, or negative potential energy.
This doomsday event is a theory branched off of a theory of a theory. Therefore, it is not that likely to come true.
I think you said that as a joke, but really, there's nothing to be afraid about it. Everything will just crumble into individual quarks, if not strings (yet another theory). No pain at all.

I did. And I have no idea what a Particle Accelerator is, or what 10^18 eV means, or what quantum tunneling is, or what substantial quantities are, or what the LHC is, or what energy particles are, or what a metastable sector of space is, or what energy vacuums are, or what quarks are, or any of that other stuff. That is *counts* 9+ things I don't know in those two posts. That's a lot.
