Anthony walked into the lab calmly, his hands behind his head. Even though he was dressed in winter clothes, he felt perfectly comfortable. He looked around, seeing if the professor or his Assistant were in. Not noticing anyone, he shrugged and let out a low whistle, then sat down on a chair and decided to wait for someone to show up.

After a minute or so, Aaron wandered into the front area of the lab, staring at a clipboard. He looked up at a machine, about to make a note on the clipboard, when he noticed Anthony. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't hear you come in," he said, looking surprised. He set the clipboard down on a nearby table and quickly walked over to the boy. "I hope you weren't waiting too long. In any case, I'm Aaron, Prof. Idaho's aide. I take it you're here for your first pokemon, right? Do you have an idea of which you'd like, or would you like me to tell you what we have?"

"Oh, no. That's fine Aaron. I was here for a while, but I don't mind," Anthony said while running a hand through his hair. "Let's see here... I think I'd like a random, If that's okay with you? It means a chance to get an icy pokemon," he said. "And besides, I'm chill with whatever else." Anthony walked over to the table holding pokeballs and looked at Aaron for confirmation.

Anthony turned back to the table of pokeballs and placed a hand on the table. He reached out and picked up the first pokeball he saw - the one directly in front of him. He then turned around to face Aaron again, and dropped the pokeball directly in front of him. There was a flash of light that made Anthony flinch. He turned away from the flash and didn't see the forming shape of a...

...little fuzzy caterpillar on the floor. By the time he looked back, the glow had faded and the caterpillar's blue and purple stripes and bright red eyes could be seen.

The caterpillar looked up at Anthony and twitched its antennae. "Vicce, vicce..." it chirped. "Larvice!"

Anthony looked at the Larvice and smiled. "Hey, you little fuzzball. What's up with you?" Anthony seemed to get carried away talking to the small insect, and in fact ended up having a whole conversation with it. Eventually, he scooped up the tiny caterpillar and turned back to Aaron. "These little guys were all over the mountain I live on," he commented. "Maybe I should give you a name... Yeah, probably. But, erm..." He turned back to Aaron. "Is he - I mean it - a boy or a girl?"

Aaron chuckled. "There's a very easy way to check that, and find out more besides. Just return it to its pokeball and place the ball on that machine." He pointed to a boxy machine in one corner that had a slot for a pokeball and a screen.

The machine hummed quietly for a moment, then the screen lit up with information about the pokemon:

Powder Snow [Ice]

Supersonic [Nrm]

"Now then, there's something else we need to do before you go; please follow me." He led Anthony through a door at the back of the lab, which opened to a grass-floored room. Among the grass grew rows of white flowers that marked the lines for a pokemon battlefield. The roof was open, allowing sunlight to flood the battlefield. "You'll get to practice battling immediately...with your first Gym battle!" announced Aaron.

Anthony smiled and picked up Larvice's pokeball. He turned away from Aaron and fiddled with it. When he turned back, the pokeball was no longer in his hands. Anthony grinned widely and replied, "I accept." He then grabbed his scarf, tore it off of his neck, and whipped it toward Aaron. A small object whizzed past Aaron and landed behind him, then there was a flash of light and Larvice came out... "Let's start this battle off strong, Crys!" Anthony cheered. He turned back towards Aaron and grinned at him, eyes full of excitement, while Crys bristled and shook some ice off her fur at the sound of her name.

Aaron smiled and took his place on his side of the battlefield. "Let's go, Nevermore!" he caled as he tossed out his pokeball. The ball burst open to release a black bird.

"Nevermore, start with a Tackle," Aaron said.

His pokemon cawed once in recognition before dashing towards its opponent.

¨Cyrs.. try to.. dodge?¨Anthony winced as Nevermore slammed into his first pokemon. ¨Urgh...¨ We need better teamwork, he thought to himself.... Anthony cleared his mind and imagined an icy plain.... He felt himself calm down, and his mind sped up.. Tactics... think tactics... Ice. Strong against Flying. Only direct attack we have.. Good. But... Damn. Bug is weak against flying. Have to avoid attacks.... Comig out of his trance-like state, Anthony gave his first command ever... ¨Crys!¨ his voice rang out. ¨Supersonic!¨

As Crys began to emit a high-pitched sound, Nevermore started to look disoriented. Even after the sound ended, the bird looked a bit unsteady.

Knowing that having Nevermore do much moving right now might be risky, he opted for a simpler attack and said, "Nevermore, Growl!"

His pokemon had a slight ringing in its hears, but it heard the command clearly enough. The bird opened its beak and released a loud growl.

Anthony watched as Crys slowly relaxed in response to the cute growl. "Come on, Crys! Fight!" Crys snapped out of her soothing mindset, looked at her master, and saw the icy calm in his eyes. Trying to respond accordingly, Crys released a blast of Powder Snow at the bird. Anthony smiled at the fact that him and Crys were already syncing up.

Nevermore shivered as the frosty blast gusted over it.

"Keep at it, Nevermore. Peck it!" Aaron called.

His pokemon started to run for its opponent, but was still unsteady and tripped on the way, skidding along the ground instead.

Anthony smiled at his luck, and quickly formulated a plan. "Crys," he said calmly. "Let's go ice-skating!" Interpreting this strange instruction as best as she could, Crys fired a continuous blast of Powder Snow at the ground and kept it coming towards her so the frantically cawing bird pokemon would ram into the wall. However, Crys was so intensely focused on her plan that she continued the icy path too far - Nevermore came skidding straight at Crys while she was still blowing ice frantically and flipped her over, stunning her temporarily while the panicked raven kept on rocketing towards the wall. "Crys..." Anthony sighed.... it seemed he would need to develop a stronger bond with his pokemon before acting on such vague orders...

Aaron smiled. It seemed Anthony was inventive, but such complex strategies would have to be better planned first. Meanwhile, Nevermore frantically flapped its wings and dug its claws into the ground, and managed to slow itself a little bit so that when it hit the wall it wasn't completely dazed. It still looked a bit rattled, though.

"Nevermore, take to the air and Tackle," Aaron called.

His pokemon shook its head to clear it, then flapped its wings until it rose into the air, slightly unsteadily. It hovered for a moment before dive-bombing the icy bug.

Crys took another hit from the bird, but it was a slight one because of its wooziness. Crys already knew what to do. They say practice makes perfect, and Crys had been using her Powder Snow attack so many times, she finally got it down. Her eyes glowed blue with an intense light, and she let open her mouth and released a howling gale at point blank range towards the dizzily spinning raven.
