What I do is I try to use a different line from start to finish each game. I try to use as evenly balanced a team as can with all the pokemon I can get before having to battle the second gym leader. I will eventually run out of beginning lines so what I do is trade over two other lines I can't get before the second gym leader from another game. Then I go through game beating the gym leaders and then the elite four. I then start whole cycle over again with different pokemon.

My current HeartGold team is thus:

- Croconaw (F), Aly
- Jirachi (the one from the event)
- Palkia (the one from the Arceus event)
- Munchlax (M), Gomi
- Exeggcute (F), Omletta
- Spinarak (M), Peter

All of these pokemon I got before beating the first gym. Another thing I usually do is trade over two Bibarel to use as HM Slaves. There really useful for that one reason. One does the land HM's (Rock Smash, Cut, Rock Climb, and Strength) and the other does the water ones (Surf, Whirlpool, Waterfall). They knew Headbutt when I caught them I was able to get the Exeggcute earlier than usual. I really like being able to get some of the legendaries at such low levels. It means that I will actually want to use them. I still have Dialga, Giratina, Regigigas, Manaphy to train and then theres the future Mew event that has already happened in Japan where we get the opportunity of getting it at level 5. Hopefully Celebi will be low and hopefully they decide to do other legendaries at low levels. I think if anyone did things my way they would probably go insane. :P
