No, I think he does it to prevent slipping in the stairs when his shoes are wet, and/or to avoid getting the stairs dirty with mud.

Here's a tricky one from me:

A man has been stranded in a desert, and has been walking around it aimlessly for a week. He hadn't brought any water along with him, and he didn't find water at any point during his journey. But humans cannot live much more than three days without drinking water, so how did the man manage to survive for that long?

No, thankfully he didn't have to resort to such extreme measures, and those survival strategies are nocive in the long run. Soble is right, he didn't drink water from a cactus, neither he drank fruit juice for that matter.

Not all deserts have cacti, by the way. And that's a clue.

Nope. He was completely lost, he didn't find any traces of civilization. Actually, in the place where this man was, there are very few outposts, they're far away from each other, and they belong to different countries.

One last clue: in order to solve this puzzle, you'll have to consider that the definition of a desert is a bit wider than it appears at first sight, and it is also important to question the definition of water given by the puzzle.

Here's a different elevator riddle.

A man goes to work. Hi workplace is on the 14th floor of the building. Everyday he goes on the elevator for 3 floors, and walks up 9 flights of stairs. Why does he do this?

Alot of jokes do that. Here's another one:

A man lives on the 24th floor of an apartment building. On rainy days, he uses the elevator to go down to the lobby, and uses the elevator up to his floor. On sunny days, he uses the elevator to go down to the lobby, and goes to the fifth floor, then walks the rest of the way up the stairs. Why does he do so?

You're absolutely correct!

It doesn't come to mind easily, but Antarctica is actually the largest desert on Earth, as by definition a desert is simply a region that receives very little precipitation (rain, snow, hail, etc.). Antarctica's climate is drier than any other, no matter how much the ice tricks us into believing the contrary. More than anything else, the continent is very windy. As soble mentioned, the man survived by eating snow or ice shavings, which do not count as water as defined by the puzzle. As I said in my first post, it was tricky, wasn't it? ^^

Yeah, it is similar. The man is a midget, and can only reach the button to the 24th floor with his umbrella, otherwise he can only reach the 3rd floor button.
