Aaron walked into the main area of the lab from a door near the back, holding a steaming mug of tea in one hand and wearing a surprised expression. "Are you new trainers? At this hour? I honestly stopped expecting people hours ago, I don't even know why I left the door open..." He cleared his throat and set his mug down on the table. "Anyway, Professor Idaho is away for a while. I'm his aide, Aaron, and I'll be taking his place until he returns. I suppose you're ready for your first pokemon. Do you know which one you might want?"

Chris then made his reply. "I'll leave the choice up to you."

Meanwhile, outside of the town...

A red-haired boy stood outside the town. He was playing an unusual frequency from a pair of speakers, its purpose unknown. He was reading a book at a street corner. Why he did was unknown. Buses came and went, he refused to enter them. All he knew was that the people he sought were nearby, and that they would have to leave sometime.
And he would be prepared.

"Alright then," Aaron said. He pointed to one group of pokeballs and told Sukida, "Those ones are Comoltens. Pick any one you'd like." Then he pointed to another group of pokeballs, set off to the side, and told Chris, "Those ones are random pokemon. We won't know what exactly is in them until we open them up. Would you like to take one of those?"

Sukida went up to the Poké balls and opened one up. As the professor said, it was a Comolten. She decided to wait until she got some info on it before naming it.
Chris, on the other hand, decided to pick at random. He put a hand over his face and used the other one to feel for Poké Balls.
"Eeny, Meeny, Miney- AAAGH!!! HOT, HOT, HOOOOOOOOT!!!!!!!! GYAAAAAH!!! OW!!! OWWWWWWWWW!!!!!"
He had put his hand on Sukida's pet Comolten. Not the smartest thing he had done all day. Though in the midst of all the panic, he had slammed his hand down on one of the buttons. The Poké Ball came open and out popped...

...a stream of white energy that spilled across the table before coalescing into a light green doglike pokémon. Startled by Chris's panic, it tried to take a step and slipped on another pokéball, then stumbled across a few others before falling off the table and sending other Random Selection pokéballs scattering.
"Triiiriikkee..." the dizzy Electrike mumbled as it lay upside down on the floor.

After Chris calmed down and ran his hand in some cold water, he decided to check up on his pet. The Electrike slowly stumbled to its feet, at which point Chris squatted down and put his hand to its nose. "Let's see what it thinks of me. After all, I probably just scared the bejeezus out of the little fella."
Sukida was tempted to pet her Comolten, but after seeing what had happened to Chris, she thought twice.
"Hey, is there anyplace where we can check status on our new Pokémon?" she asked.

As Chris was cooling off his hand, Aaron was gathering up the pokeballs that had rolled away. At Sukida's question, he looked up from counting them to make sure he'd gotten them all. "Oh, yes. If you return your pokemon to their pokeballs, then place them one at a time in that machine there, it'll tell you some information in them." He pointed to a machine against one wall that had a slot for a pokeball and a screen.

It appeared that Chris' new Electrike liked him, even if he almost gave it a heart attack. He decided to pet it with his non-hurting hand while Sukida got some info on her new Comolten. She put her new buddy back in its Poké Ball and walked up to the computer. She set down the ball, careful not to incite the wrath of anything that could set her on fire, and stared expectantly at the screen...

The machine hummed for a moment after the ball was placed on it, then the screen lit up with some information:

Comolten
Male
Fir

Moves:
Tackle: [Nrm]
Charges into the opponent.
Growl: [Nrm]
Lowers opponent's ATTACK ability by one stage.

Aaron finished counting the pokeballs and nodded to himself, satisfied that he'd gathered them all. he looked up to see that Sukida had gotten her information, then said, "Alright Chris, it's your turn at the scanner now."

Sukida picked up her Poké ball and smiled. She looked at it while thinking up a name
"...Shoemaker. That oughtta do."
Thankfully, Electrike decided to work with its new pal. Only after a stern glance from Sukida did he resist the urge to make a dirty joke à la AC-DC. Chris put Electrike and the Poké Ball which now contained it into the slot on the computer, with a thoroughly restrained feeling of anticipation...

A weak jolt of electricity that paralyzes the foe.

"Now that you've both recieved your pokemon and met them, there's one more thing for you to do," said Aaron. "If you would come this way please..." He gestured to a door at the back of the room, then walked through it. When the two new trainers followed, they would see a room with no ceiling and a grass-covered floor. White rows of flowers marked out the lines for a pokemon battlefield.

"Your first challenge as trainers shall be...a Gym Battle!" announced Aaron. "Choose which of you will be fighting first, then step up to face me." He walked over to one side of the field and stood in the area marked for a trainer, watching the trainers expectantly.

Sukida decided to step up. Shoemaker was ready and raring to go, and she didn't want to deny him the opportunity to fight. "All right, Shoemaker, let's go!"
Meanwhile, Chris decided to play with Electrike. He had already come up with a name. When Chris called the new pet under her new name, that is, Moon Unit, Sukida put a hand to her forehead and groaned.
"Hey, Aaron, you know where I can buy a chew toy?" he asked.

Gym Leader AARON Wants to Fight!

Aaron tossed the pokeball onto the field, which opened to reveal a small, dark-colored bird. "Nevermore!" squawked the bird as it fluttered its wings eagerly.

In response to Chris's question, Aaron told him, "Most Pokemarts should have pokemon toys of various sorts, as well as a variety of other supplies."

Nevermore cringed from the loud sound, more surprised than usual because it had not recognized that the attack was coming.

"Interesting, it looks like you and your pokemon are communicating well already," Aaron said. "Nevemore, Tackle it."

Nevermore dashed forward and leaped at its opponent, ready to ram into him.

Shoenaker was launched from the attack, almost setting fire to Sukida's pantlegs. It seemed that Nevermore still had some fight in it.
((Please ignore that sentence if I have covered matters I am unfit to cover...))
Sukida wasn't stunned, though, after all, this was the gym leader. She decided to switch plans.
"All right, Shoemaker, give us a game of Whac-A-Mole for Short, Dark and Violent!"

(OOC: No, it's prefectly within your rights to say such things; you dictate whether an opponent's attack hits your pokemon, and how your pokemon reacts. I actually think it makes a battle more interesting if you roleplay the effects of an attack instead of jumping straight to commanding your pokemon's next move, so feel free to keep RPing that way.

Shoemaker rammed squarely into Nevermore, tossing the bird back. It hopped to its feet and warily eyed its foe, not liking the hot opponent that had singed a few of its feathers.

Aaron saw that his pokemon didn't want to get too close to Shoemaker just yet, so he called, "Growl at it, Nevermore."

Happy to comply, Nevermore loudly growled at its firey foe.

Again Shoemaker rammed into Nevermore, but this time the bird seemed to barely feel the impact, and was more bothered by the heat its opponent gave off than by the attack.

"Nevermore, Peck at it," called Aaron.

Nevermore jabbed its beak at its foe, squinting its eyes to shield them from the heat.

Comolten rolled a couple feet before stopping, bouncing off a wall and hitting the ground, a mite shpongled. Sukida decided to switch tactics.

Shoemaker managed to shake off its state of, er... rattledness... off long enough to let off a good growl.
