Now that we're currently talking a lot about changing the types of existing Nintendo (and PF) Pokémon, to include Magic, Light and Wind-types, the Staff felt it the right time to put up this particular topic. We have decided on a list of Pokémon that receive a type change, but we have not come to a final decision on one particular Pokémon; you've probably guessed by now that this Pokémon is indeed Ninetales, a Pokémon with a mystical and magical nature.
We're facing the following three options:
A. Keep Ninetales as a pure Fire-type Pokémon;
B. Make Ninetales a Fire/Magic-type Pokémon;
C. Keep Ninetales as a pure Fire-type Pokémon, but give it access to Magic-type moves.
Before we ask you to post your thoughts on this issue, and post your preferred option, we would like you to read the following arguments for or against changing Ninetales' type. These arguments were once posted by various members and/or Staff on the board and are, in random order, the following:
1. (in favor of option A): I
don't think it's a good idea. There's really no standing for it, except for that one reference from mystery dungeon
. Ninetales would gain a quadruple
weakness to rock, as well as lose its defensive advantage against steel, and would gain weakness to dragon type attacks. To compound the problem, what
magic-esque attacks do Ninetales have? None that I know of, so unless through TM's Ninetales wouldn't benefit from the added on type. All together it
looks to me more like a hindrance. Keep it at just Fire.
2. (in favor of option B): Personally, I like the idea of making Ninetails Magic-type. It's based on a magical creature in japanese folklore, is it not? The thing crops up everywhere (Naruto is a good example).
3. (in favor of option A): Based on that logic, Mawile, Frosslass, Smoochum, Jynx, and countless others would be made into magic types.
4. (in favor of option B or C): Not at all. The creatures in which Mawile, Frosslass and Jynx are based upon (Futakuchi-onna, Yuki-Onna, possibly the latter or Yama-Uba for Jynx) are not described as wielding magic like Kitsune are. Moreover, Yuki-onna is a ghost that freezes people, fitting Frosslass' typing perfectly without the need of any changes. And ghosts are not exactly considered magical beings; supernatural does not necessarily equal magical, and this also goes for those creatures' origins. Since Kitsune do actually wield magic, and so does Ninetales in a way (one of its dexes says "Legend has it that Ninetales came into being when nine wizards possessing sacred powers merged into one"), I support placing it as Fire/Magic. Then again, I wouldn't mind to leave it pure Fire with access to Magic-type moves.
5. (in favor of option C): By looking at the available Magic-type moves, I think there are some of them that fit this pokémon really well, but they're only a few. Why bother, then, to give it the secondary type just for those few moves? Being a stone evolution, Ninetales' move list is quite short, actually it doesn't learn any new moves after evolution at all. Therefore, we could just make it learn a couple of Magic-type moves after evolution, and perhaps another as a Heart Scale move, and then leave it just like that, at pure Fire.
6. (in favor of option B): Its dex info is our main argument. The argument above mentions its birth by the merger of nine wizards. Other usable dex info would be the 1,000-year curse it places on those grabbing its tail, and the fact it lives for 1,000 years because of the fact that is tails are imbued with a mystic, supernatural powers.
So, we would like you to read the above very carefully and vote. Please post your thoughts below afterwards.
