While we haven't specified any way to identify the different Porygon, I'd say that the solution could be as simple as having Porygon include the ability to display its version number when requested.

@Flars: That hardly makes sense.
Ash and co are shown eating in the anime, but there is no hint of them beign pokemon. If they eat shrimps, they do NOT look like Crawdaunt.

I have a question: Why are there no Pokémon that... idk, y'know, personify actual elemental spirits? We see all these Pokémon who have these atributes, but we never see WHO gave them to the Pokémon!

Well, because fish have to live in water. Name a fish that doesn't need water. Lungfish? Well, it can not survive forever on land.

How can someone dig in water and dive on dry land? I'm glad pmd took out that mistake, but I don't see the official chain do it.

Actually, they make a tunnel of water appear under them to use dive on land. Same with dig on water.
Remember the Groudon VS Kyogre battle in Emerald? Groudon stands on a patch of dry land he raises out of the water. Dig is similiar in water.
