The battle Ammon just witnessed was intense. All the hairs on the back of his neck rose, tip to base. The ferocity of the Pokemon's attacks were astonishing. He had never before seen a battle like that up close, and an excitement swelled within him as he thought about his own future. His pokemon becoming just as powerful as the Ursaring and Brandle he just saw. His Pokemon rising to any challenge, great or small. Right now, he had problems controlling a simple slakoth. Such a future seemed afar off.

Ammon stayed behind, not saying a word as the other trainers congratulated their friend. Calleo led the victor to another part of the gym, taking a small while before returning. The trainers said their farewells and left the gym, leaving him and Calleo alone together. Nervous, Ammon walked up to Calleo, bowed, and said, "Forgive me for bothering you so soon after such an intense battle Calleo sir, but I would like to challenge you for your badge."

Ammon awaited Calleo's response with great anticipation.

Ammon did like plants. In fact, he loved them. He had noticed the great many trees and other vegetation when he first entered the gym, but because of the battle he couldn't truly appreciate them. Now he could, and what he saw amazed him. The Bastion City Gym could easily be described as a miniature forest, a bastion from all the rock and steel in the city outside. Breathing in deeply, Ammon caught the aromas of the great variety of plants. He could identify some species, such as the Pomeg plant or the scent of a Oran tree, but there were many exotic plants that he had only seen in books such as an Apicot tree and Belue tree. The countless battles had taken their toll on the plants however. While the exotic species were reserved for the edge of the battle arena, remaining largely unscathed, abundant sturdy oaks and maples showed deep scars from battle. Ammon did notice however that there were no dead trees or plants at all on the field (except for those felled by the recent battle).

It seemed to Ammon that Calleo took great care to keep the arena beautiful, which would require constant maintenance. Ammon knew that anyone who would go to such lengths would be capable of growing anything. Though he was eager to see more of the gym, Ammon felt it was impolite to wander the rest of the it without Calleo, despite the go-ahead from him.

Seeing the Snowyd made Ammon smile. His starter pokemon was a near perfect match against this Ice and Grass type Pokemon. With a pop and a shout Ammon released Firmole onto the battlefield. The carefree fire mole bobbed up and down waiting for the first command. Ammon commanded Firmole to use Ember and with exuberance his Pokemon obeyed; the fiery projectiles flew toward Calleo's first choice.

Ammon saw the incoming projectiles and ordered Firmole to counter with Ember. The pokemon obeyed spitting out hot embers at the Razor Leaf attack. The tiny flames easily ripped through the leaves, but some still managed to penetrate and hit Firmole. He squealed slightly from the impact of the sharp leaves but seemed fine. Ammon smiled. "Good Firmole, stay strong. Let's try another Ember!"

The water droplets annoyed poor Firmole as they made contact. He squealed in frustruation and ducked underground without any command from Ammon who looked incredulous at the fresh hole in the battlefield. "Please Firmole, come back up and let's finish the fight."

There was no response from the hole; just empty silence. This isn't good, thought Ammon. If he doesn't come out to battle soon then I'll have to forfeit and send out another pokemon. He and Calleo waited for a few more seconds and then Ammon decided. "I guess Firmole is not coming out again." With a sigh he continued, "I suppose I'll just send out another pokemon. Go Slakoth!"

This move was more out of desperation than anything. Both of his other pokemon, Sprout and Gosel, were weak to Ice-type and Ammon couldn't afford to lose them, but while Slakoth didn't have his other two pokemon's weakness he was extremely disobedient. Slakoth came out in a burst of white light and stared dispassionately at the Snowyd in front of him. "O.K. Slakoth here's your chance to win some food. Use Scratch!"

Slakoth didn't respond. Instead, he gave a big yawn and fell asleep not persuaded in the least by the promise of food. This seemed oddly out of character to Ammon, but it revealed to him that Slakoth disliked him more than he originally thought. He hung his head in embarrassment. "I'm sorry Calleo. This battle isn't going the way I though it would. I'll try Gosel!"

With that Ammon returned the slumbering slakoth and released Gosel. "Okay Gosel use Tackle!"

Ammon hoped Calleo was right about Firmole. He winced as he saw the Powder Snow hit Gosel who honked irritably. "Hang in there Gosel. Use Tackle!"

Gosel charged toward Snowyd, but was weighed down by the snow on his feathers.

The attack was too much for Gosel to take. Along with the super-effective Powder Snow, the bite was enough to make Gosel faint from pain. Ammon's stomach lurched inside as he saw another one of his pokemon fail. Their failure was his. He took a deep breath and looked down at Sprout, who was in his arms watching the battle. She too had a worried look on her face as she saw her comrades fall in battle. "Well Sprout, would you help win this fight?" Ammon asked.

Sprout looked into Ammon's eyes and gave determined nod. With energetic jump and cry Sprout was ready to do battle with Calleo's kapacorn. "Use Sweet Scent Sprout!" Ammon commanded. The leaves on Sprouts head began to shake violently releasing a pleasant pink powder into the air.
