No, I don't! I'm in America! Someone wrote a translation guide to Mother 3 for the fan translation! I (unfortunately ....) don't know a bit about Katakana! It stated something around the lines of: "Alec (Lucas's Grandpa; to Flint): Don't worry! Soon we'll be home and free to...lay! Get it? Frito-Lays?!"

Unfortunately not valid. Puns do not carry over in translation; the translator must make up a new pun that makes sense in English to replace the pun that made sense in Japanese. Thus, the reference to Frito-Lays was written by an American.

For example, in the Pokémon episode where Ash's Metapod evolves into Butterfree, Misty (who, it was established last episode, does not like bugs) spots another bug and goes ballistic. Before bothering to look, Ash sighs, and says "Maybe it's..." cut to a scene in which he is now wearing a cow costume. "...Cow-terpie!" (It actually proves to be a Weedle.)

If that seems like a very odd pun to make, that's because it is. In the original Japanese, Mist ahem, "Kasumi" was shouting "Mushi! Mushi! Mushi, mushi mushi mushi mushi..." over and over. mushi, you see, is Japanese for 'bug'. Ash Satoshi sighs and interrupts, yelling "Ushi ushi ushi!" ushi, as you might have guessed, is Japanese for 'cow', thus the visual gag of Satoshi wearing a cow costume as he makes fun of Kasumi. The folks in charge of translating this to English stewed over how to deal with the visual gag since the "bug sounds like cow" pun was not going to fly in English, and "Cow-terpie" was the best they could come up with.
