After a nice chitchat with Botispine on MSN, I thought up a nice little unofficial contest.

In the new Pokmon games Ruby and Sapphire, there are already two glitches discovered. The first one is "Pokmon 390" which looks like this: ?? (Yes two question marks.)

However, there is another glitch, which can be unlocked by a Gameshark code. This is Pokmon #000.

Now, the complete dex info goes like this:
This is a newly discovered POKMON.
It is currently under investigation.

No detailed information is available
at this time.

Now, this is strange. The Pokmon is not obtainable, only using a code. You'd say it's a glitch. If this is the case, then why did Nintendo bother to translate the dex info into English?

If you'd like to join the contest, post a nice, interesting theory on the question why Nintendo decided to translate the dex info.
When everybody (Staff are allowed to join) has posted his/her theory all contestants will be rewarded with a nice surprise!

The dexes are located on top of page two of this topic.

Well, I believe that possibly their game-creation program is incapable of starting the PokeDex system at #001, so Nintendo has to make something to fill in #000. They translated it into English, when they translated the entire game, because they know people hack the game.
"Lets just hide the dex...and not do anything with it..."
'But they're gonna find it."
"Hm. You're right. Let's just translate it."

And so, I believe that is teh story of the Pokemon #000

Other theory:
Nintendo created a real Pokemon for #000 obtainable only by solving a series of codes in the game. The Pokemon was so powerful, however, and the game was so easy to hack, Nintendo had to get rid of it. But weapons inspector Hans Blix came and saw this Pokemon before it was deleted, and considered it a "Weapon of Mass Destruction". Nintendo was then infiltrated by CIA and FBI agents and ordered to hand over all the information on Pokemon #000....

so..yeah...

But anyway, here's my opinion...I think Pokemon #000 was another 'Test Pokemon' (like Missingno. was intended to be) used to test out the new battle and dex systems. But instead of attempting to remove it and leaving behind its 'skeleton data', which is what they did with Missingno.(making its picture and moves appear glitched), they forgot about it altogether until it was too late, so instead of removing it and taking the risk of creating another Missingno., they translated its dex and left it in the game as a feature only unlockable by Gameshark.

Maybe Pokmon 000 was actually a REAL Pokmon in the Japanese versions, probably Deoxys, that is maybe put as a very secret trick in the game for the ones who can achieve it. Nintendo wished to release Deoxys in Nintendo events and such, so they did not agree with this and re-programmed the game. To not risk creating a glich or failure int the game, they translated a new mystery dex and put in a ? pic. Nintendo has already done this before. In the Japanese Red/Blue versions, the guy in Celadon City that tells you to come to him when you have 150 Pokmon actually is believed to give you a Mew, but in the English versions, he gives you a useless diploma. This would also explain why Deoxys is an unobtainable/special event Pokmon, since it doesnt fit with the Mew/Celebi/Jirachi line. Its more like Mewtwo.

But then thats my strange mind.

i have a ROM hack tool. 390 is i think bagon (cuz 252-27(2or6) ae blank, and it messes up the pattern. 000 is real and its icon is a golden bubla. Missingno theory- 1 vote. 390 i dont know about. 252-276 is clearly a glitch in the system.

I don't think the dex starts at 000; if it did, it would be a problem, and the developers would fix it. I think it's like Missingno, atest Pokmon they forgot to get rid of. Or, maybe it's a placeholder for a special Pokmon that can't be got from hacking, Nintendo actually has to change the game to add it in.

If it is a test Pokemon's remaings, you'd think that Nintendo would bother to get rid of it. Considering, there's been something like this in all the pokemon RPGs for Gameboy. Unless they left it in as an easter egg.
But Nintendo is famous for leaving "trash" in the Pokemon games. Meowth at Pokemon Forever, who regularly hacks the games to get secrets, found an old map for an abandoned idea for making The Lake of Rage a town w/ a gym. IN the game, still!

omg, never knew he did that..Ya ind in Ru/Sa theres a whole whack of weathers and music that aren't used. Some more as more programs come out. Ya theres snow (prob the ash) 3 snowflakes, a second thunderstorm, many variation of fog/cloud and everything.

1. I reckon its because the Japanese creators thought 'Haha, let's make a Pokemon #000 and confuse all the hackers who find it. We'll get the translators to translate it though because then it'll confuse them more. They'll be pondering their little brains out over something that doesn't exist! Hahahaha...' lol, okay, stupid.

2. At one stage there may have been a Pokemon there, but somehow the picture self-imploded. And when somebody finally finds the picture of it, they'll discover its really a laughing head that mocks people.

3. The Pokemon is right infront of us. Yes, it is a question mark. The dex really should read: 'All those who look upon it are left in a dazed state of mind, wondering about what it really means. In the end the victim itself turns into a question mark.'

Wait, another theory:
That is the dex entry - the template for all the others. They have it at 000 because that's not taken by any other dex, and whenever you get a Pokmon, the placeholder gets overwritten. That's why they need it in English.

Okay, I'm bored with serious throries!
It's Missingno's placeholder, so when you get it in Fire Red or Leaf Green it'll be okay to transfer it over! Then you can lose another game save!

Speaking from a programmer's point of view, it's possible that this mock dex is a crash-prevention item. If something wierd happens to a program and it ends up trying to access data that doesn't exist, it can kill the program. So programmers sometimes set up empty decoys to which the program is redirected if the data it's looking for doesn't match any of the 'real' data.
Of course, if that were the case, there'd be an awful lot of variants of the Game Shark code that would produce this dex.

Okay, now for a less realistic and more fun theory. Perhaps this pokmon, which will eventually come to be known as Metanigma, is Voltorb's successor in the line of pokmon accidentally created by modern technology! First Pokballs, now Pokdexes...what's next? A Pokgear Phone pokmon?

Odd that this hasn't been stated yet...

In addition to the 000 being error prevention, since all coding starts its count at 0, possibly they were planning on having that text appear in place of the dex info for a pokemon that you have seen, but not yet captured, Later scrapping this idea and with their habit of leaving programming trash lying inside their cartridges, they forgot to remove the message, though they did remember to dummy it out, and this is the result.

I've found tons of dummied items in my long habit of enterring random variables in for an item cheat. I'm pretty sure most everyone here with a gameshark remembers the ????? item from R/B/Y that acted like Surf out of Battle. Experimenting with such things with more equipment intense games, like FF or SaGa frontier has yielded similiar things, like the 330G item in FF, which if equipped, acts as armor, and if de-equipped, acts like evasion up the wazoo.
So yeah, dummied stuff exists all the time. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if I found out the existence of dummied classes in X-2, later.

But, for a better, IE- more amusing theory... There WAS going to be a pokemon there, but they just kinda forgot where they put it.

This is my theory:
The people at Nintendo must probably be aware of MISSINGNO's discovery by the pokmon fans. Thus, it's going to take advantage of the remakes of the first games to make MISSINGNO a real pokmon, the real pokmon number zero, not just a glitch. It will be obtainable in the remakes somehow.

both poemon are queation marks, right? there is only one other pokemon that is a queation mark: the Unown that looks like one! Perhaps this is a way to unlock it and the exclamation point one!

Actually, I used a Game Shark a while ago to fill my pokdex all the way up to 386, and it turns out that the ! and ? Unown are just as accessible as the rest. There's now a 1/28 chance for any given Unown you meet to be a certain form...

The Missingno. theory does hold a bit of weight, however. Missingno.'s image in Red/Blue could easily have been produced by a hole in the code, but there is no logical explanation at all for the ?? pokmon, save that Nintendo deliberately added it in as a hidden species.

Why the heck would they do that? That's like a major recording company allowing you to download entire cds for free. ESPECIALLY since video games and consoles are much more expensive and costly to make than cds are.
If Nintendo "gave hackers a break", as you delicately put it, then they'd essentially "be losing money".
