This has been bothering me for a while.
The size of Gloom is 2' 7"
The size of Bellossom is 1' 4"

So, Bellossom, the evolved form of Gloom is actually smaller than Gloom itself.

This really struck me as weird, after all there's even a rule of PF which says:
"evolved forms are likely to be stronger, or at least bigger"
on which I most certainly agree.

Now, I'd like to hear all of your opinions about this weird case. So, post your thoughts on why Nintendo decided to make Bellossom smaller than Gloom.

Speaking from an evolutionary standpoint, Bigger is not always better for survivability. Also: Bellossom is more of an exotic flower that you have to take care of, as opposed to Gloom, which is the exotic flower that's hardy enough to survive in the jungle.

There are rare cases of pokmon less massive then their pre-evolved forms. A classic example is Alakazam, whose focus on mental power is so great that its physical body weighs quite a bit less than Kadabra's. Of course, Alakazam is mentally much stronger than Kadabra, so there's no great dilemma there. I do agree that Bellossom's shrinking was a great surprise, though. Perhaps Gloom is just so poisonous that when the Sun Stone's power purges the poison from its system, it loses half its mass? $:\$

That one struck me as odd, also. Why should Azurill be normal? All the other babies share one of their evolved form's elements.

Hm. Bellossom is the about the size of Roselia, who is a rose pokemon. Diglett's even smaller, just a miniscule 8 inches. Some Pokemon's sizes just don't make sense.

How tall is Voltorb? 1' something? How can someone mistake it for a Pokeball? Pokeballs fit into your hand. It's hard to mistake something that is usually about 6-7 inches for something twice that size.

Yes, there are many pokdex entries which sound ridiculous ... Like R/B's pokdex entry of Muk, which says "even its footprints contain poison", when it doesn't have feet. (I think I read that in another part of this board...

)
Also, there are pokdex entries which sound odd to me.. Like this entry of Metapod from Pokmon Crystal...
"This is its pre-evolved form. At this stage, it can only harden, so it remains motionless to avoid attack."
It's just me, or that phrase does not seem to fit in?

As for Gloom evolving into Bellossom, I don't have any idea of why it shrinks... There are other examples, like Porygon:
Porygon's size is 2' 7'' but Porygon2's size is only 2'.

At least the people at Nintendo have not gone as far as Digimon... I mean, Mega_Seadramon evolves into Marine Angemon? It's really ridiculous! Of course, Digimons do not have anything to do with Pokmon, they have an entirely different concept, but it still does not make sense to me.

Hmmm... Pory's explanation sounds logical. Gloom does look very poisonous, maybe it's all poison inside.

Azurill is still normal type? :eek

Jeesh, I thought that was just an early assumption and hoped it would change to water. Normal doesn't make any sense at all!

As for Porygon... Well, Porygon2 is just the improved from, styled and somewhat smaller.
(I was just thinking of what would happen if someone posted "Porygon2" in the letter game :P)

Here's another weird thing (I haven't checked up on this fully, so I'm sorry if I'm mistaken): Doduo and Dodrio are supposedly flightless birds, and yet they can learn FLY. oO

Oh, and another thing about FLY...I noticed that Absol (a pokemon without any obvious wings) can learn it too. What does it do, spin its horn like a helicopter?

He's an eye-rolling monkey that uses it's eyes to spin his horn like a heli. Bananas are fuel.

New oddity about Absol- Notice when your scrolling through the PC it shows the pok's pic? go in the stat screen and it's a basic flip image. The odditiy is that Nintendo was too lazy to make another pic, and just left Absols pic as it is! LOL!

Lol, that IS funny! I can understand Porygon2 because its like the first models of computers. They filled an entire room, and then people predicted that computers would get bigger and only the 10 richest people in the world would be able to afford them! :rollin

Erm, where did you get the idea that Absol can learn Fly? It can't. Its HM usage is restricted to HMs 1, 4, 5 and 6. I think your source material was mistaken.

Yeah,I was pretty sure Absol couldn't use fly. It can use Razor Wind. But so can Shiftry.

There's actually a reason they didn't swap the picture with Absol. That one horn is only on ONE side of its head, and to flip the pic would mean it would be on the other side of its head, defeating the purpose.
