This topic has been made in pretty much every Pokmon site, and I thought itd be interesting to hear your opinions.
As everyone knows, Pokmon Diamond & Pearls Generation IV has brought with it a myriad of new evolutions and pre-evolutions for Pokmon of early generations. When you compare them to the number of new pre/evolutions introduced in previous ones, you obviously see a difference.
Heres all the new pre-evolutions and evolutions in Generation IV just so you can see the number.
Generation I
- Mime Jr. (Mr. Mime pre-evolution)
- Munchlax (Snorlax pre-evolution)
- Pinpuku (Chansey pre-evolution)
- Jibacoil (Magneton evolution)
- Beruberuto (Lickitung evolution)
- Dosaidon (Rhydon evolution)
- Mojanbo (Tangela evolution)
- Electivire (Electabuzz evolution)
- Booburn (Magmar evolution)
- Leafia (Eevee evolution)
- Glacia (Eevee evolution)
- PorygonZ (Porygon 2 evolution)
Generation II
- Etebossu (Aipom evolution)
- Muumajii (Misdreavus evolution)
- Donkarasu (Murkrow evolution)
- Bonsly (Sudowoodo pre-evolution)
- Mantyke (Mantine pre-evolution)
- Weavile (Sneasel evolution)
- Togekiss (Togetic evolution)
- Megayanma (Yanma evolution)
- Glion (Gligar evolution)
- Manmuu (Piloswine evolution)
Generation III
- Subomi (Roselia pre-evolution)
- Rozureido (Roselia evolution)
- Riishan (Chimecho pre-evolution)
- Erureido (Kirlia evolution)
- Dainoosu (Nosepass evolution)
- Yonowaaru (Dusclops evolution)
- Yukimenoko (Snorunt evolution)
Thats 29 in total, by the way. So, whats your opinion on the overwhelming number this generation around?
I for one think its great. Theyre imbuing old Pokmon with new life by making you take them out of the dusty corner of your PC box where you had forsaken them, and evolve them into even more powerful monsters. It also gives several Pokmon an opportunity to shine like theyd never had before--Nosepass, Piloswine, Gligar, Yanma, Togetic, Sneasel, Murkrow, Aipom, Misdreavus, Tangela and Lickitung will all be seeing much more action now that they have new evolutions.
From a competitive point of view, this is good, because it further balances the Pokmon Metagame by giving trainers who wish to battle competitively even more choices in teams, preventing it from becoming stale and leaving everyone with Salamence, Metagross, Tyranitar, Gengar and Gaburiasu to place in their parties. The only question here would be: why in the world was Chimecho given a pre-evolution instead of an evolution?
From a design point of view, evolutions are also great, as they expand the concept on which the Pokmon were based off of. While some look completely outlandish compared to their former or later stages, they still manage to fit in quite nicely for the most part.
It seems like GameFreak is trying to complete all of their ideas in this generation and those to come. Perhaps we have reached a mid-point in the life of Pokmon, and generations from now on will concentrate on fixing flaws in the game, evolving Pokmon that need it and such?
Whats your opinion, anyway?
