One of the three Starter Pokemon given away by Pokemon Professors in Argeon, Croakid is the requisite Fire-type. The first of a three-Pokemon evolutionary line, Croakid are great companions, being completely loyal to their Trainers during the heat of battle. It evolves into stronger toad Pokemon, who gain the Poison subtype upon evolution. For now, Croakid isn't strong enough to use Poison-type moves to a great extent, seeing as its poison glands are small and incapable of producing much more than mildly discomforting toxins. In the care of a Trainer, Croakid is capable of using powerful Fire-type attacks, as well as Poison-type attacks which are better used with its evolutions.

In battle, Croakid attacks with fiery moves such as Ember and Flame Wheel. The small horn on top of its head is, as of its first evolution, mostly for show, but in battle it will ignite as the Croakid works ever harder to ward off danger. Croakid are also capable of using Poison-type moves; one of the first signs that Croakid is ready to evolve soon is the the irregular belching of poisonous smog. Croakid can also use various other moves, such as Brick Break and Fire Punch, though only through TMs and Move Tutors.

While we're talking about moves, the Croakid line's signature move is a devastating Poison-type move known as Toxic Dart. A super-beefed up version of Poison Sting, Toxic Dart not only does a significantly more powerful 70 damage, it also has a small chance of inflicting a burn. Croakid learns it at a high level, but his evolutions learn it much earlier.

(Croakid's Japanese name comes from ko (a root word for "child") and hikigaeru (meaning "toad").)
