In the manga, people can look through their balls and see their pokemon. Usually, a mini version of the pokemon's just sitting there inside the ball. Or pokemon can be litter cyber thingy's, like digimon. That would explain you being able to store them on a computer.

But Digimon need food too... or do they?

It may determine where you are in time & space, but warping Space-time will not affect the volume of one thing. The volume of a pokemon is simply determined by how many atoms, or in subatomic view, how many quarks and electrons make up the pokemon.
Unless, of course, you mean that the pokeball warps space-time to send a pokemon to a larger space. However, space-time has only previously been manipulated in Super hero novels, in which the Superheroes have special powers. Humans in the pokemon world, don't.
Humans in the pokemon world do not seem to have the technology capable of warping space-time. Yes, there are the occasional hover-cars, advanced technology. However, we, humans of this world, are nearly capable of creating hover-cars! Several real hover-cars have been made ALREADY, and the only reason you don't see them on streets is that they are MIGHTILY expensive, dangerous, and won't fly for a really long time.
Really, they don't seem to have enough technology to warp space-time. Pokemon aren't dormant in pokeballs. In the Pokemon Special series (and possibly others) you are able to look through pokeballs and see your pokemon. They don't seem to be sleeping. Another hint is that in the games, if you view your team, little Pokemon sprites are MOVING, almost hopping up and down. If you check their summary in Crystal or Emerald, they do their animations, proving that they are not asleep.
