At pokemonpalace.net there is a rumor that the starters might not follow the usual fire-water-grass triangle but fighting-dark-psychic, now that would also result in type effectiveness change. Even so, I have a hard time believeing it and if there is a chance that they do this I will be really dissappointed.

I wouldn't like it. It's not needed and it would change a system that has worked fine for ten years, but of course I guess it wouldn't hurt the game too much.

Hm, I can't say I would be happy with it either. It's just to big a change. Besides, I would really like to see another Grass starter.

I'm a little happy they're going to be shaking things up a bit. But what really is going to effect things is the apparent change in attacks...induvidual attacks being designated as Physical or Special, as opposed to whole type classes.

That would make more sense in my opinion. Hyper Beam seems more like a special attack than a physical one.

I don't think it's a good idea. Besides the fact that Fighting/Psychic/Dark have different relationships to Fire/Grass/Water, FGW was used because it's an easy introduction to type relations.
It's easy to see weaknesses and strengths with fire water and grass, because they are things everyone is familiar with. But psychic abilities, physical fitness and evil/misunderstood? That doesn't work nearly as well.

Swampert being Water/Ground makes Mudkip a slightly worse pick than the other two as far as type relations, but the Dark-type in that group would have a very obvious advantage and probably would become the clear favorite. Starters should not be that unbalanced. I mentioned this recently on another board as well; there are other triplets that would work better than Fighting-Psychic-Dark. For example, a Rock-type, a Fighting-type, and an Electric/Flying-type would have the proper relations.

I still think they should stick with Water, Fire and Grass. Over the years they have become the most well known elements of the game, and the type trinity is never clearer with elements as obvious as them.

There's been talk of a balancing of these three types, which would clearly have to be done. But I am not against changing of the three starter's types, provided they form the strength/weakness triangle.

Same here. And if they do make it the P/F/D triangle, it might be a one time deal, just to try it out.

On a side not, does anyone else think that the picture on the news page on Serebii.net, the one with May and Manafi, seems a little... odd?

It does. But, apparently Manafi sees May as its mother - so maybe that prevents you from seeing other scary things in it :P

As for the special/physical for the attacks, I think it's a nice change. Makes things a bit differently and more logical. Although I really never realized that Hyper Beam was physical and Crunch special...

A steel starter? That is very overpowering for that early in the game. No poison, physical attacks do squat against it. It's not like there's ever much water at the begining of the game... wait, how would that triangle go? Steal doesn't have a weakness against ice or ground. Fire is super effective against steal, as I recall.

Actually, Steel is indeed weak against Ground, so offensively the triangle works.

Offensively, it works. Defensively it doesn't. There's no reason for the Ground-type not to use its STABbed Ground-type attacks on the Ice-type, or the Steel-type not to use its STABbed Steel-type attacks on the Ground-type. Ice comes up the big loser because the Steel-type can shrug off its STABbed Ice-type attacks. We could probably find a dual-type for the Steel-type that would make it work, but there's no reason to find a way to make a Steel-type starter work because Niklix is right. Steel doesn't belong in the early game, at least not paired with other types that don't have as great an advantage.

Well, once again, 3 new potential starters have surfaced. The quality of these is very high, but from what I can see, these are also fakes. Oh sure, the quality is high, but I can cell shade in Flash, too. Still, they are pretty convincing.

Serebii seems to think these three new Pokemon are legit. I like the look of them. Psiceratops. Cute little dark kitty. Fighting 'roo.

They don't say they think they're legit, they say they look professional and are drwsn in the right style, but there's no source to vouch for them, so there's no way to tell if they're real or not.

I do agree that they look just like Ken Sugimori art, but I'll wait until there's some sort of confirmation before I believe anything. Though they are quite cute.
