All that talk about nicknaming our pokemon in the 'Nicknames Reavealed DS Style' made me wonder what was your favorite nickname for a pokemon and why did you name it that. And also, do you have any nickname styles for instance, when I had Pokemon Gold, I would name my pokemon with a human name according to the letter of it's first name and gender.

But I have a Cacturne named 'Pokey'. I named it this because of the cactus monster from the mario series was funny looking and I thought that it was funny. I'm thinking about catching another and give it cute moves and enter it in a cute contest.

I have a Camerupt name 'Vesuvius'. I named it this because of the Vocanoe that erupted in Pompei and it sounds cool.

I once named my Red Gyarados RedDragon because it was red and looked like a dragon.

I had a bellsprout named after my sister because she was skinny like a Bellsprout and she looked like one.

I tend to nickname Charizard Fiery.. long story. Haunter became Yurei, japanese for ghost or spirit.
I played RSE on holiday with my girlfriend, and she got quite into breeding Spinda for different patterns.. and nicknamed them all with B for some reason. Bernard, Beans, Footbeard, Earbean... yeah, she is a little strange

Yes, if you look at the head of several Spindas, the circular spots are in a different place for each one. I believe I once heard there was over a billion different spot patterns.

As for nicknames, when my sis and I first got our first pokemon game, Red, we decided to nickname every pokemon we caught. Occasionally we couldn't think of a good name for a pokemon, so we'd nickname it after a random other pokemon. Like we might catch a Venonat, for example, and nicjname it Diglett. Which made finding a certain pokemon in the PC even harder. Needless to say, we didn;t do that the second time we played through the game

When I played Sapphire, I nicknamed the trainer and all the pokemon I intended to use after characters in a forum-based RPG I was in at the time.

In GSC, I will often use a Quilava and a Poliwag for HMers (Cut, Strength, Rock Smash; Surf, Whirlpool, Waterfall, Thief.) I nickname them Fire and Rain.

Ive gotten into the habit of nicknaming all my Pokmon since Ruby. The majority of them come from mythology or literature, but there are a few odd ones as well.

For some Generation IV Pokmon, I already have nicknames in mind. Oberon the Erureido, Groucho the Dainosu, Boreas the Fuwaraido...

I have always nicknamed my pokemon. It really depends. Sometimes its to do with characteristics or features, e.g.

Rattata: Nibbles
Pidgey: Wings
Seviper: Fangs

Others, I give them names that I think would have been a better name for them, e.g.

Bulbasaur: Solarsaur

Others, its just random. Something cool to match what they are like:

Electrode: Boom-E
Sharpedo: Torpedo
Sceptile: Blade
Zangoose: Grudge

What do you guys think?

Coincidence. I may not nickname my pokemon in the RPGs but in Mystery Dungeon, I did. I names my Bulbasaur, Solarsaur and the other one Bruteroot.

And yes, ninjamatt your nicknames sound cool.

I just got the idea, what if i named my fighting pokemon after various styles of fighting like:

Machoke- Val Tudo or mix it up a bit

or
Primeape-Mi Tzu

I usually merge the starter pokmon names with the version Im playing. My brother does the same thing (it was, actually, his idea.)
Sceptile => Treemerald
Empoleon => Empearl
Many others just come, like Veeko, my Pelipper which is a mixture of my nickname with Mr. Brineys Peeko.
Some others, like ninjamatt2, I name them as I wanted them to be called.
And sometimes I try translating them to my language.
Oddish => Rarano
Ditto => Idem
Heracross => Escaracles
Magcargo => Caracoal
Snover => Nievencino
Delibird => Entregave
The rest of them are random...

Cool names. Just out of curiosity, what is your language. I find it fascinating how many people from different countries know english, yet I myself know only the basics of some other languages, like German and Spanish. We English are really lazy when it comes to other languages.

Im pretty sure its Spanish. Delibirds nickname, for example, is probably a combination of "entregar" (to give) and "ave" (bird).

Rarano = Raro (odd) + Rbano (radish)
Escaracles = Escarabajo (beetle) + Heracles
Caracoal = Caracol (snail) + ?
Nievencino = Nieve (snow) + Encino (live oak)

I've got a story about English people and foreign languages. The brother of a friend of mine lives in Spain, and got married to an English woman that had gone to live there as well. Despite having been in Spain for a long time, she never really bothered to learn to speak the language, and thus inside the house they speak only in English, my friend's brother included. She just knows a few words and phrases in Spanish, not enough for a fluent conversation (much to the annoyment of her mother-in-law!)
The fact that she lived in Spain for years knowing so little Spanish emphasizes how much of an international language English has become, it's the new Esperanto. You can go anywhere in the world and someone will speak it. And thus, I don't see much of an incentive for native English speakers to go learning other languages. I'm not complaining, I love English almost as much as my mother language. I sometimes find myself thinking entirely in English. And to be fair, all the tourists I've encountered so far make an effort to speak our language when they come, Englishmen included, of course.

Back on topic, in the remote case I get to buy a Nintendo DS to play these games, I'm planning to get a Torterra under the name of Terratlas, to match the new name of PF's old Torterra. I also want a Bibarel which I'll nickname Barrel. I never mentioned it, but I love Bibarel and its new type combo. I'll use it for battling no matter how 'weak' it is supposed to be.

Empolean: Aquarius ( The word "aqua" and because a lot of my friends are aquarius ((my closest ones)) though I have this one whose gemeni... I think I'm gonna be cautious around him)

Staraptor: Mukkuhawk ((mmhmm... Japanese there))

Luxray: Raineko ((Again, Japanese. Um literally "lightning cat"))

Monferno: Inferno (You're crazy if you don't get that and speak English)

Mime Jr. (2): Mimey and Sonyen ((Sonyen's Korean for "boy". Did a little of my ancesty there. ^^;

Machop (2): Anthony (Mystery Dungeon thingy) and Ure-yo (from the RPG here. Again, Ureyo is cry in Korean- just like Nun-mul is tear ((as in teardrop)).

Bibarrel (1 in each): Diamond: Roadrat Pearl: Bevere ((Beaver + Severe)

Legendaries were all named the same names except I made the letters lower case. Oh, and my friend caught me a Buneary that he named "IHAVEDOWNS"... That's mean... Aw well, it's not like I'm using it anymore. Already got it to evolve.

You got me, well it was somewhat obvious anyway... yes, spanish is my native language. I do not live in Spain by the way, Im from America (the continent) and well, every word and rule I know from the English language came to me either by task (bilingual sp? school) or by motivation (videogames in english, err... yeah, foreign movies and tv programs do get translated where I live, most videogames like the pokmon ones dont). But Im glad I did, I know its not perfect but thanks for the props. You know, I actually admire people who take the time to learn Spanish more; Ive heard it is of the hardest languages to be learned and, not to be rude to anyone who finds it, but English is the most spoken language in the competitive world and it is almost mandatory to speak it if you plan on achieving greater things. Learning another language could deal with the same matter, but it is usually related with pursuing a personal goal or having altruist feelings, those are the people who I most admire. Congrats also to the ones that post here or in any topic and whose native language is different from English.

Anyway, this is a pokmon nickname topic so Ill return to the main point. Here are some more of my pokmon nicks, you may notice that the accent is missing in the spanish ones because it is also missing in the games:
Starmie => Fugaz (err... shooting? in spanish)
Smeargle => Art-illery
Camerupt => Volcamel (I actually wonder why it wasnt named like that, oh well too simple maybe.)
Kyogre => Leviathan
Groudon => Behemoth
Moltres => Fenix (Phoenix)
My Magcargo is named "Caracoal" because of caracol (snail) and coal. Sorry I was not entirely honest last post: this was also my brothers idea, the thing is I also named my Magcargo like that, but I assure you that the rest of them are truly my ideas; Im specially proud of Rarano, it matches Oddish so well...

Ya, a lot of kids I know have a crude sense of humor. I know people with Downs Syndrome... Their not that different then us - it just takes them a bit longer to figure things out. I agree, that's very cruel. I turned the game off when he told me but I found out he had saved afterwords... I'm stuck with the thing unless I release it but it had some awesome attacks. Now I'm like, "what do I do with this?"
