Actually, it came out the same time that the other 149 originals did (excluding Mew, it was a secret.) It only got popular because of Ash. It was actually the aforementioned excluded Mew that got it spiked up. But that's technical terms.

I thought the anime (don't know how to shortcut accents) was out before Red and Blue. And I have to get off for dinner now, so i can't look it up.

First off, Rhydon was the first Pokemon ever designed.

Secondly, if it wasn't for Miyamoto's daughter, there wouldn't have been Pokemon. Since she asked for a game like that and all that.

Actually, I haven't heard anything about Miyamoto's daughter, but I read in a magazine that Miyamoto himself thought up the idea of there being two versions.
