Because when you trade them over to a new game, when they hit level 11, bada-bing, bada-boom, they stop taking orders! That is, until I beat the second Gym. Even that way I will still have to endure a lot of "X ignored orders! X used Thundershock on Sandshrew!" on the way there. But I guess that's half the charm in a weird way.

Not to mention it feels more "natural" to train them the whole way in the new game, sans doing those couple first levels as EV training. The in-game is more fun if they're of appropriate level to them fights, if you catch my drift. Since starters have always been level 5 and newborn bred pokemon used to be, I think I can afford that much leeway to myself

Actually, all pokemon up to level 20 will obey you when you get the first badge in HG/SS. I know this because I have already played the games.

Does that include traded pokemon? Because as far as I know, it's always been much earlier "breaking point" of obeying for those who you actually traded as opposed to caught yourself. Actually, I don't think I've ever witnessed a self-caught(in the same game) pokemon stop obeying...

It would help a lot, but at the same time it would smash some fond memories of Crystal way back then - where I indeed fought a fair few of my own pokemon on the route from first gym to the second

Ah well, we shall see. But I will still expect to be doing some quality head//desk action before I'm on fourth Gym, just in case... if for no other reason, it's because of that infernal Miltank that utterly destroys everything in it's way... *shUDDER*

(...pun intended.)

EDIT: Yea, checked about it, and this is indeed the case. Mm. Well, seeing as they get boosted(1.5x) experience, it's still rather possible they're over 20 by the time I hit third Gym...

Anyway, back to the original topic, I just got my copy of HeartGold and it is AWESOME. A lot of things have been changed, including the PokeCenter, the Pokedex, the whole "your Pokemon walks with you" thing, and so much more. I haven't even gotten to the first gym leader yet and I'm already enjoying it .

You know, I've got to admit, at first I thought the Pokewalker was pretty dumb. But now it's awesome! I put my Pidgey on it, and after a day at school, I've added a Doduo, a Magby, a Hoothoot, and a Machop to my collection. Very cool.

One of my friends just got SoulSilver yesterday, and I hope to be getting HeartGold soon. Once we catch some version-exclusives I hope to trade with him.

Funny you mention that. My bro just phoned and told me he got us HeartGold AND Final Fantasy III, a game I wanted LOOOOOOONG ago, (he also got a game he wanted)!!!!
The only issuue? I can play NEITHER!!! Because I have to wait til vacations to visit my family... DRAT!
